Hanwha Power Secures Preliminary Approval for 1,700 TEU Battery-Powered Containership Design

Hanwha Power's Major Milestone in Eco-Friendly Shipping

On October 22, 2026, Hanwha Power marked a significant milestone by receiving preliminary approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its groundbreaking design of a 1,700 TEU containership propelled solely by batteries. This cutting-edge design, featuring an integrated energy storage solution, sets the stage for achieving zero-carbon emissions in maritime transportation.

The approved concept showcases a fully electric containership powered by a high-capacity Energy Storage System (ESS) boasting approximately 151 MWh of energy storage. This innovative design enables the vessel to operate without any direct carbon emissions by leveraging existing port charging infrastructure, thus championing sustainability in the shipping industry.

One of the standout features of this design is the utilization of containerized battery systems. These containers can be easily handled and stored like conventional cargo, enhancing spatial efficiency, maximizing payload capacity, and optimizing overall vessel performance. This approach not only facilitates flexible battery replacement but also supports scalable operations, presenting a practical path toward the decarbonization of regional short-distance maritime transport.

Jong-kyu Hwang, Vice President of Technological Solutions at Hanwha Power, stated, "This ABS approval represents a pivotal breakthrough in our journey to enhance maritime technology capabilities, particularly in developing fully electric ships powered by large-scale battery systems. We are committed to meeting the evolving demands of the zero-emission maritime transport market with integrated solutions that synergize electric propulsion and battery system technologies."

The approval ceremony, which attracted significant attention, took place during the Maritime Hybrid, Electric, Hydrogen Fuel Cells (MHE) Conference and Exhibition 2026 in Bergen, Norway. Hanwha executives were present to commemorate this achievement alongside representatives from ABS.

In addition to the 1,700 TEU vessel, Hanwha Power has also completed the basic design of a battery-powered container ship with a capacity of 1,000 TEU, further solidifying its position as a leader in the electric ship design sector. By leveraging experience gained from designing various classes of vessels, the company aims to develop a comprehensive range of electric propulsion ships tailored for diverse operational conditions and customer requirements.

This recent approval not only strengthens Hanwha Power's commitment to innovative designs but also reflects a growing trend within the industry towards sustainability and environmental responsibility. As the shipping industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, Hanwha Power is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of eco-friendly maritime transport.

With the approval in hand and a clear path forward, Hanwha Power is eager to explore new business opportunities within the rapidly expanding market for next-generation zero-emission maritime transportation solutions. By integrating advanced battery technologies and electric systems into their vessel designs, the company is committed to driving forward the evolution of environmentally friendly shipping practices around the globe.

This vital step taken by Hanwha Power highlights the importance of collaboration between industry innovators and regulatory bodies, paving the way for the maritime industry to navigate towards a sustainable future.

As international regulations increasingly emphasize carbon neutrality, innovations such as those presented by Hanwha Power will likely become instrumental in achieving the vital goal of zero emissions in maritime transport.
