Exquisite Craftsmanship and Beauty: An Exhibition at Meiji Jingu Museum

The Meiji era was a transformative period for Japan, marking the transition towards modernity and a profound evolution in craftsmanship. Amidst the turbulence of this era, skilled artisans excelled particularly in the field of metalwork, especially in producing intricate sword fittings under the Edo shogunate. With the shift in political structure during the Meiji period, these artisans found support from the government, allowing them to create works that reflected the changing aesthetics of the time. This shift not only preserved traditional techniques but also inspired the production of new forms of artistic expression.

The upcoming exhibition, titled "Exquisite Craftsmanship and Beauty: Meiji Jingu Museum’s Collection of Metalwork," will highlight pieces associated with the royal family, including exquisite artifacts made for Emperor Meiji and Empress Dowager Shoken. The displayed works include ornamental pieces such as vases, stationery, and bonbonnieres, showcasing the technical prowess and creative spirit of the craftsmen.

Among the notable exhibits is the Oborogin Kinmoku - a beautiful incense burner inspired by the tale of Genji, crafted by Masamitsu Ito, which reflects the high level of artistry achieved during the era. Additionally, the Sakura Tree Hawk Vase by Yoshiharu Nakagawa demonstrates intricate detailing and design, offering viewers a glimpse into the aesthetic values held dear by the Meiji court. Another significant piece, the Sparrow and Myoga Chrysanthemum Vase, designed by Yasuyuki Namikawa, captures the essence of seasonal beauty intertwined with traditional metalwork techniques.

Furthermore, the exhibition will showcase modern metalworks dedicated to the Meiji Jingu, linking past artistic traditions with current expressions of craftsmanship. These works symbolize the enduring legacy of Japanese metal artisans and their ability to adapt and thrive through changing times.
