International Tourists Experience Vibrant Chinese New Year Festivities in Yulin

Celebrating the Colors of Chinese New Year in Yulin

On the 14th day of the first lunar month, a diverse group of international visitors gathered at the Folk Song Museum located in Yulin, situated in the northern part of Shaanxi Province, China. This cultural journey commenced with a mesmerizing performance by Wang Zhixing, a renowned folk singer, who showcased his improvisation skills. The folk songs of Northern Shaanxi, characterized by their high-pitched melodies and intricate rhymes, have been passed down through generations. These songs capture a spectrum of human emotions, from labor songs to romantic duets, and follow the rites of weddings, funerals, and festivals, reflecting the essence of life in the region. In 2006, these folk songs were inscribed on the first national list of intangible cultural heritage in China. One foreigner aptly summarized his experience: "This song conveys the beauty of China. While I may not understand the lyrics, the language of music resonates with me."

Inside the Yulin Folk Art Research Institute, preparations were underway for the National Yangko Performance Exhibition of 2025. Originating during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Shaanbei Yangko is a vibrant entertainment form that integrates dance, operatic performances, and rural ritual festivities, all showcasing the optimistic spirit of people living on the loess plateau. In 2008, Yangko from Northern Shaanxi also secured its place on the national intangible cultural heritage list.

The 2025 Lantern Festival in Yulin attracted not just Yangko troupes from all over China but also folk art groups from Bulgaria, Thailand, South Korea, and Russia. This fusion of Eastern and Western cultures breathed new life into the traditional Yangko of Shaanxi, captivating audiences with its colorful performances. Foreign guests commented on the impressive dances and presentations they witnessed, noting, "I appreciate their performance and dance—it's truly remarkable. The communal spirit of celebrating the Chinese New Year contrasts with the typical Western family-centered celebration."

By participating in the Yangko parade, attendees didn’t just enjoy the performance; they connected with the deeper significance of cultural heritage. "The cultural confidence reflected in the eyes of the performers allows us to experience 5,000 years of civilization. I have great respect and admiration for this culture," expressed one visitor.

From the enchanting echoes of the Folk Song Museum to the lively experience of street Yangko, Yulin has built cultural bridges that connect friends from both near and afar through the art of intangible heritage. These vibrant melodies and dance moves serve as a heartfelt gift for the Chinese New Year, offering the world a glimpse into the cultural tapestry of this nation while rejuvenating the traditions of Northern Shaanxi in contemporary times.
