Empowering Future Physicians: Next Gen Scholars Initiative in Hospice and Palliative Medicine

The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) has proudly announced the receipt of a significant grant from the Adtalem Global Education Foundation, aimed at enhancing the Next Gen Scholars for Equity in Hospice and Palliative Medicine program. This initiative seeks to empower individuals aspiring to thrive in hospice and palliative medicine (HPM), particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. As healthcare disparities continue to rise in marginalized communities, programs like these play a crucial role in addressing inequities and ensuring quality care for all.

Launched in May 2023, the Next Gen Scholars program is a timely response to the increasing demand for qualified HPM practitioners. The program is spearheaded by AAHPM's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, aiming not only to bolster the pipeline of healthcare professionals but also to promote diversity within the field. Research indicates that there is a notable lack of culturally effective hospice and palliative care services in underrepresented communities, contributing often to inequities in care and unsatisfactory patient outcomes.

Statistical data is revealing: fewer than 5% of hospice and palliative medicine fellows are African American, and less than 8% are Hispanic. Such figures underscore the urgent need to increase diversity among healthcare providers, which, according to studies, has been shown to significantly enhance health outcomes and patient satisfaction. By expanding representation within HPM, the Academy aims to address these disparities and foster an inclusive healthcare workforce.

Program Overview

The Next Gen Scholars program is designed for post-graduate medical residents and fellows who are committed to pursuing careers in HPM. Each scholar is paired with a sponsor, an established leader and expert in the field, who provides mentorship and advocacy throughout the two-year journey. The mentoring relationship is structured to encourage regular communication, fostering professional growth and collaboration on meaningful projects. Scholars are expected to produce a final project, which can include case studies, clinical research, education-focused initiatives, and projects related to equity, thereby embedding academic rigor into their professional development.

To support the scholars, the program offers travel stipends, allowing them to engage with their mentors, participate in the AAHPM Annual Assembly, and build valuable networks within the HPM community. Applications for the program will open each spring, with the next cohort set to commence in January 2024. Institutions are encouraged to help identify qualified candidates who can benefit from this initiative aimed at enhancing diversity and representation in hospice and palliative medicine.
