Shanghai Electric Collaborates on Record-Breaking Biomethanol Bunker Operation
On August 17, 2023, Shanghai Electric Company took a monumental step in maritime fuel innovation by partnering with both the Shanghai International Port Group and CMA CGM Group for a remarkable biomethanol bunkering operation. With an impressive volume of 8,000 tons, this operation is now recognized as the largest singular biomethanol bunkering event ever recorded, signifying a transformative leap in the shipping industry's shift towards more sustainable practices.
The memorably themed bunkering ceremony held at the Yangshan Port in Shanghai, titled “Green Fueled Globe, Lead the Future,” showcases a commitment to environmental sustainability and positions Shanghai Electric at the forefront of green energy solutions.
A pivotal contributor to this groundbreaking operation was the Taonan Project, which focuses on the production of green methanol. This project not only marks a significant volume milestone but reflects the ability of the Taonan initiative to assure stable production and distribution channels. The achievement rests upon a seamlessly connected interprovincial supply chain, designed to fortify the delivery of green fuels across regions.
Furthermore, a previously established transport corridor for environmentally friendly fuels was officially activated during the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable Development Conference held on June 30 this year. This corridor facilitates the North-South methanol transportation route, beginning with production at the Taonan Project in Jilin, followed by handling and storage at the Dalian Port, and concluding with the bunkering process at the Shanghai Port.
Shanghai Electric leverages abundant local wind and solar resources, along with biomass feedstock sourced from Jilin, at the Taonan site. The facility employs proprietary complete process systems and core equipment making it the world's first large-scale operation converting green electricity and biomass into biomethanol. Complying with the standards set by Shanghai’s International Maritime Center for ship bunkering requirements, it plays a critical role in the expansion of key centers focused on green fuels in the global shipping industry.
Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric is committed to strengthening its full industrial chain that encompasses the production, storage, transportation, and utilization of various green fuels. The company plans to intensify its research into core key technologies while continuously expanding its integrated solution offerings within the green fuel sector. Through technology-driven innovations, Shanghai Electric aims to propel industrial advancements and collaborate with partners to accelerate the development of an integrated project for producing green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from the coupling of green hydrogen and biomass gasification in future phases of the Taonan project.
In pursuing these endeavors, Shanghai Electric commits to continually bolstering capabilities that support the air and maritime traffic sectors with large-scale green fuel supplies. The overarching aim is to align with China’s national dual-carbon goals and spearhead the global transition towards low-carbon, clean energy solutions, impacting the industry and environment positively.
