Hankook Tires Showcased Exceptional Performance at WRC Rally Islas Canarias 2026
Hankook Tire & Technology, renowned as the exclusive tire supplier for the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), has once again demonstrated the resilience and technological prowess of its products at the recently concluded Round 5 of the 2026 WRC, the Rally Islas Canarias. Taking place from April 23 to 26 in the picturesque Canary Islands, this year’s event marked a significant milestone as it celebrated its 50th anniversary in the motorsport calendar. After being included in the WRC series in the previous season, this year’s edition proved to be an exhilarating contest for teams and spectators alike.
The rally unfolded across rugged terrains of Gran Canaria, centered around Las Palmas, with a challenging course that stretched over approximately 322.61 kilometers, consisting of 18 Special Stages (SS). The unique characteristics of the course showcased high-abrasion asphalt surfaces adapted to the island’s volcanic landscape, which presented numerous challenges such as significant elevation changes and sudden weather variations. These conditions added an unpredictable element to the competition, making it essential for teams to adapt quickly.
On the opening day, participants faced off at the Super Special Stage held at BP Ultimate - Circuito Islas Canarias, where competitors raced head-to-head on a shared layout. This early stage not only set the tone for the event but also allowed some teams to establish momentum that would carry them through the entire rally. It was here that even minor differences in speed could dramatically impact placements, emphasizing the thin margins that characterize rally stages.
Hankook provided its advanced rally tires, the Ventus Z215 and Ventus Z210, innovatively designed to perform under extreme conditions. Both tire models showcased remarkable grip and stability, allowing drivers to confidently navigate the demanding course while maintaining high speeds through intricate cornering sections. This reliability was pivotal, especially when road conditions changed abruptly due to the fluctuating weather associated with dense fog and localized rain prevalent at higher altitudes.
In this gripping fifth round, Sébastien Ogier of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team celebrated an impressive first victory of the season. His team not only captured the win but also dominated the podium, reinforcing their strength in this fiercely competitive championship. Elfyn Evans, Ogier's teammate, currently leads the Drivers' Championship with 101 points, closely followed by Takamoto Katsuta with 99 points, a testament to TOYOTA’s prowess on the rally circuit.
Looking ahead, the 2026 WRC season gears up for Round 6, the Vodafone Rally de Portugal, which is set to take place from May 7 to 10 in northern Portugal. This upcoming rally is noted for its predominantly unpaved roads, making it one of the most demanding events in the championship calendar. To enhance its engagement with fans and highlight its commitment to excellence, Hankook plans to showcase a dedicated ‘Brand World’ booth within the service park during the event. This initiative will feature motorsport content and interactive experience programs, further conveying the brand’s premium image to rally enthusiasts.
Since taking on the role of exclusive tire supplier across all WRC classes in 2025, Hankook has consistently demonstrated its high-caliber technological capabilities and product competitiveness. By utilizing data amassed from more than 70 global motorsport championships, Hankook has driven innovations in advanced tire technologies, ensuring that the Ventus brand continues to lead in the high-performance segment.
As this exciting season progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming challenges, where Hankook's commitment to performance and technology will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the outcomes in future rallies.
