The Impact of Japanese NGO's 9-Year Efforts on Nutrition Education in Cambodian Schools

Nutrition Education in Cambodia

In recent years, the topic of nutrition has garnered significant attention globally, and Cambodia is no exception. The International Development Relief Foundation (FIDR), a Japanese NGO headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has played a pivotal role in improving nutrition education in Cambodian schools over the last nine years. Before the initiation of this project in 2017, nutrition education in Cambodia's schools was virtually non-existent. This lack of nutritional knowledge had long-term detrimental effects on the country's health and wellbeing.

The situation in Cambodian schools was alarming; there was no formal education on nutrition, leading to widespread malnutrition among the population. Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Ministry of Education in Cambodia decided to incorporate health education into the curriculum for primary through high school levels. Within this framework, nutrition became a crucial focus area. However, implementing systematic nutrition education required extensive technical cooperation at all levels, from curriculum development within educational administration to teaching methods in classrooms.

In collaboration with the Cambodian Ministries of Health and Education, FIDR took the lead in developing vital resources such as nutrition requirements for school-aged children and dietary guidelines starting from 2014. Through their efforts, they built a solid foundation for the subsequent educational programs. The nutrition education project, which started in 2017, was made possible through generous contributions from individuals and businesses in Japan.

One of the project's significant accomplishments was the establishment of model schools nationwide that demonstrated best practices in nutrition education. In four selected schools, educators saw remarkable improvements in teaching capabilities and the overall school environment. Not only did the initiative enhance the knowledge of nutrition among students, but it also equipped teachers with the necessary tools to educate effectively.

The story of this long journey towards implementing nutrition education in Cambodia illustrates the challenges and triumphs faced by FIDR and its local partners. Their dedication to fostering healthy eating habits amongst the Cambodian population is essential for the country's stable growth and development. Good nutrition is a fundamental aspect of health and well-being, which cannot be overlooked as citizens work towards a better future.

To share the experiences and changes witnessed throughout this extensive journey, FIDR has organized a report meeting open to all interested parties. We encourage anyone who would like to learn more about the progress of nutrition education in Cambodian schools to attend.
