Understanding the Importance of Reuse
On August 8th, an exciting event titled "8th of August Reuse Day - Connecting Smiles to Future Power" was held to promote awareness about reuse among elementary school students and their parents. Organized by ValuesFusion, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, along with over 54 supporting companies and organizations, this event aimed to instill the values of sustainability in young minds.
An Interactive Learning Experience
With the backdrop of active participation, children had the opportunity to learn about reuse through hands-on activities in various booths set up by ten different companies involved in the reuse sector. Each booth featured workshops, quizzes, and interactive experiences that helped convey the critical significance of reuse in our daily lives. During this event, children discovered how fun and valuable it can be to incorporate reuse practices into their lifestyles.
Highlights from the Event
The event kicked off with an opening ceremony featuring representatives from the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, alongside business leaders from participating reuse companies. The discussions focused on innovative initiatives in the reuse sector and highlighted the importance of integrating reuse principles into our everyday routines. Both children and their parents showed genuine enthusiasm as they engaged in the talk sessions, eager to learn more about the positive impacts of reuse.
Engaging Workshops
Following the opening remarks, attendees flocked to various booths offering unique and immersive experiences:
- - The Up Garage booth allowed children to explore used tires and wheels, teaching them the value of vehicle parts.
- - At the Kitamura Camera booth, kids learned how to use film cameras and even took snapshots, experiencing capturing moments firsthand.
- - The K-Brand Off station equipped participants with knowledge about bags using magnifying glasses for inspection.
- - Kids created original jewelry using pearls of their choice at the Komehyo booth.
- - The Sofmap booth provided an engaging hands-on activity where children assembled parts to build their own computers.
- - At the Hard Off booth, kids delved into retro records and understood the mechanisms that produce sound.
- - Belong offered an opportunity to act as smartphone appraisers, enhancing kids’ analytical skills.
- - The Book Off booth engaged children with the journey of toys before they hit the shelves again.
- - Market Enterprise invited kids to observe items and decide their pricing strategy.
- - Mercari's booth tasked children with creative missions, prompting them to think critically about the reuse process.
Spreading Awareness for a Circular Economy
The event, returning for its second year after its inception in 2025, plants the seeds of sustainability and circular economy concepts among participants. As kids engage with the various activities, they build foundational knowledge about reuse practices, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Testimonials from young participants highlighted the event's impact:
"I had fun learning about different ways to reuse!"
"I was surprised by how many reused items there are, it changed my perspective!"
"I learned how to be environmentally friendly instead of just throwing things away."
The organizers emphasize this event as a stepping stone towards creating ongoing opportunities for children to engage in sustainable practices, paving the way for a brighter future.
