Enhancing Skills in Exergy Analysis at Upcoming Seminar on April 28

Practical Seminar on Exergy Analysis and Calculation Techniques

The I.R. Technology Education Institute is set to host a public seminar focusing on exergy analysis, scheduled for April 28, 2026. This seminar is designed to provide participants with comprehensive insights into the fundamental concepts of exergy, as well as practical calculation techniques related to thermal and chemical exergy. Attendees will engage with real-world case studies concerning materials manufacturing and gas turbines, further solidifying their understanding through exercises and examples.

In today's world, addressing social issues like carbon dioxide reduction, energy conservation, and environmental impact is paramount. To enhance processes and systems, it is crucial to identify where and how much loss occurs. While energy can be understood through the conservation law, actual processes lose potential due to entropy generation, leading to a diminished capacity for 'useful work.' Exergy analysis quantitatively measures the quality differences of energy, visualizing losses associated with various elements. This approach is increasingly being adopted as a method to guide the effective utilization of waste heat and materials, as well as improvements in manufacturing efficiency.

Course Details

The seminar structure is carefully organized to begin with a foundational understanding of exergy concepts, progressively leading to advanced calculation methods for thermal and chemical analysis. Participants will delve into materials and energy equipment through case studies that address the identification of losses in individual processes and outline key points for improvement. The lectures will encompass exercises and examples, making it easier for practitioners to connect the learned concepts to real-world analysis and design considerations.

Seminar Program

1. Conceptual Understanding of Exergy
- Energy and Exergy
- Definitions and expressions of energy (intensive and extensive variables)
- Energy encompassed by entropy (diffusion and configurational entropy)
- From entropy to exergy (Carnot cycle, significance of environmental standards, what exergy can and cannot explain, understanding societal systems)

2. Practical Calculation Methods for Exergy
- Calculating thermal exergy (consumption associated with heat transfer, phase change calculations)
- Exergy of substances (chemical exergy)
- Reference species and their significance
- Step 1: Exergy of basic substances (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen) and mixed phenomena (exergy of gas diffusion)
- Step 2: Exergy of pure substances
- Step 3: Chemical exergy of compounds
- Exergy of mixed gases

3. System Analysis
- Categorization for calculations
- Case Study 1: Analysis of materials manufacturing (ceramics, iron production)
- Case Study 2: System analysis (gas turbines and others)

Target Audience

This seminar is aimed at professionals involved in process system design, energy-saving system development, and LCA researchers. No prior specific knowledge is necessary to participate.
