The Surge Institute has officially welcomed Alex Cantu as its new Chief Operating Officer, marking an exciting phase for the organization which focuses on uplifting leaders of color in education. Cantu, who possesses over ten years of experience in nonprofit management, is expected to drive strategic growth and enhance organizational effectiveness.

Background and Experience



Before joining Surge Institute, Cantu was the COO at MAYA Consulting, where he played a pivotal role in doubling both revenue and staff size. His leadership was instrumental in creating an inclusive workplace culture, earning the company recognition as a “Best Place for Working Parents” and the Small Business Excellence Award from the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Cantu's career has also been marked by various roles in local and statewide organizations aimed at supporting children and families through direct service and public policy. His commitment to community engagement and empowerment defines his professional ethos and aligns perfectly with the mission of Surge Institute.

He also holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Edward's University. His academic excellence was recognized with the Dean’s Graduate Business Award for leadership.

Additionally, Cantu is an alumnus of Leadership Austin, bringing further insights into community-driven initiatives and governance.
