Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Leverages Football Rivalry for Debt Relief Awareness

Raising Awareness through Football: Coast Guard Mutual Assistance's Initiative

When the U.S. Coast Guard Academy squares off against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on November 14 at Audi Field, it won't just be about football. This year's Secretaries' Cup is set to serve as a powerful backdrop for Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) to promote a vital message that extends beyond the gridiron: the importance of seeking financial help.

In recent years, CGMA has witnessed a concerning rise in requests for debt management assistance, with figures tripling over the last three years. This alarming trend aligns with a broader pattern of financial stress impacting Coast Guard members and their families, highlighting the urgent need for support amidst escalating financial pressures. As the official relief society of the U.S. Coast Guard, CGMA has provided substantial assistance, amounting to over $12.1 million in grants and interest-free loans to assist nearly 4,000 members in 2025 alone.

The Need for Support

This campaign comes at a time when mental health concerns are increasingly prevalent within the Coast Guard community. A tragic milestone was reached in 2024 when suicide rates among Coast Guard personnel soared to their highest in a decade, with 14 individuals lost to suicide. Financial difficulties often compound mental health challenges, making it crucial to emphasize the available support systems.
