Teamsters Local 282 Votes Unanimously to Authorize Strike at US Foods

Teamsters Local 282 Votes to Strike

In a unanimous decision, over 260 members of Teamsters Local 282 in New York have voted to authorize a strike against US Foods, a major food service distributor with a market capitalization exceeding $19 billion. The drivers are advocating for better wages, enhanced benefits, and safer working conditions as they feel undervalued for their contributions to the company's success.

Tom Gesualdi, President of Local 282, emphasized the importance of the drivers in the company’s operational success, stating, "Our members not only deliver US Foods products, they drive the company's profits. US Foods has the resources to offer a fair deal and avert a strike. Our members know their worth and won't back down."

The ongoing dispute centers around the drivers' demand for a contract that reflects their labor's value. Tony Casten, a veteran driver and member of Local 282, expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, "If we don't get a contract that recognizes our hard work, we'll have no choice but to strike. It's the last thing we want to do, but when push comes to shove, we have to stand up for ourselves and ensure our labor is respected. We're not asking for anything unreasonable."

Last year, US Foods reported $39.4 billion in net sales, making its drivers’ demands even more pertinent as they highlight the disparity between the company's profitability and their compensation. Their potential strike could impact hundreds of deliveries across local restaurants, hospitals, and schools throughout the New York tri-state area, thereby affecting community access to essential supplies.

The situation is not limited to Local 282. Teamsters in Local 2 and Local 190 are also in contractual negotiations with US Foods and may similarly launch strike actions. The comments from Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, highlight the wider implications of the grievances. "Our fight isn't just in New York. If US Foods continues down this path, it will pay the price across the country. The Teamsters represent more than 5,000 US Foods workers nationwide and we are united and ready to take a stand against this company if necessary," said Erickson.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents over 1.3 million dedicated workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. As negotiations between US Foods and the Teamsters unfold, the potential strike underscores the necessity for companies to prioritize fair labor practices, especially in a landscape where workers are increasingly vocal about their rights and needs.

The resolution of this dispute could set a significant precedent for labor relations within the food service industry and beyond.
