From May 29 to June 4, 2025, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will be the venue for the much-anticipated 84th Nihonga Exhibition, aptly titled "Creating New Horizons in Japanese Painting." Organized by the Japan Nihonga Association, this prestigious exhibition seeks to highlight the rich tradition of Japanese painting while embracing contemporary sensibilities.

A Historic Event


Since its establishment in 1938, the Nihonga Exhibition has evolved into a vital public forum for showcasing Japanese paintings, attracting artists from diverse backgrounds. With over 80 years of history under its belt, this exhibition continues to champion free expression and fresh perspectives in the realm of Japanese art. This year's event will feature a wide array of works from both young talent and seasoned professionals, showcasing the evolution and creativity embedded in modern Nihonga.

Event Details


The exhibition will run daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, although entry will close at 5:00 PM. The museum will be closed on June 2, so be sure to plan accordingly. On the final day, the exhibition will wrap up early, closing its doors at 3:00 PM.

  • - Admission Fee: General ¥500; free for students, individuals with disabilities plus two companions, and holders of special exhibition tickets.

Robert Clauder Award

Instituted to nurture artists with an international perspective, the Robert Clauder Award honors the legacy of Robert Clauder. Since its inception in the 73rd exhibition, it has facilitated residency opportunities for 11 artists, allowing them to explore diverse cultures and reinvigorate their Nihonga creations with fresh insights.

Ikenohata Gallery Award

Newly introduced in the 84th exhibition, this award aims to support artists through the generous sponsorship of Ikenohata Gallery.

Legacy and Future


The Japan Nihonga Association was founded on April 12, 1938, in Tokyo, bringing together artists who sought a common platform for showcasing their work. The spirit of collaboration and public engagement remains a guiding force today. Notably, this year's exhibition will showcase the work of 93-year-old Suzuki Mieko, who serves as a living testament to the continuity and vigor of Japanese painting.
