A Unique Children's Theater Experience at the Noh Theater: 'Noh Theater Music Play Bekankō Oni' Takes the Stage

Noh Theater Music Play: Bekankō Oni

The Noh theater is set to welcome an enchanting new performance titled 'Noh Theater Music Play Bekankō Oni,' created by the Zenbaku Kyogen Kai, which aims to foster an appreciation for traditional Japanese arts amongst the younger generation. This event marks the first installment of the 'Getting to Know the Noh Theater Project,' spearheaded by Daijiro Zenbaku, a significant figure in the Kyogen world and a designated Important Intangible Cultural Asset holder.

In a unique twist, this performance offers free admission to elementary school students when accompanied by an adult, sparking excitement and curiosity about the revered traditions of Noh and Kyogen. Over its history, 'Bekankō Oni' has captivated audiences, boasting more than 4,000 performances. Now, it returns in a fresh format specifically designed for the Noh theater, promising an unforgettable experience for families.

The Cast and Creative Team

Leading the cast is Daijiro Zenbaku, supported by fellow Important Intangible Cultural Asset holder Chisaburo Shigeyama. The production also features the notable musical director and conductor Takashi Ishinabe, bringing together a wealth of talent and expertise to create a vibrant theatrical landscape.

The play is based on a folk tale by Akira Sanetō, exploring the themes of mountains, villages, and the relationship between humans and demons. The manuscript has been reworked by the writer Asaya Fujita, presenting a contemporary interpretation devoid of traditional Kyogen language, making it accessible to modern audiences.

What to Expect

This performance will transport audiences into a whimsical world where a gentle yet misunderstood ogre named Bekankō meets a young girl, Yuki, who cannot see and is often bullied by her peers. As their unlikely friendship blossoms, both characters develop an extraordinary bond that defies social norms. However, the world strictly separates humans from demons, leading to compelling challenges in their journey together. This poignant tale highlights themes of love, friendship, and breaking societal barriers.

The integration of live traditional Japanese music, including the Koto and Shakuhachi, enhances the experience, melding visuals with rich auditory elements, creating a truly immersive and engaging environment for the audience.
