Urgent Reminder for Division I Athletes to Submit Claims
As the deadline approaches, Division I athletes are reminded that they have just one week left to file their Claim Forms or provide crucial contact and payment information. This is in relation to the
In re College Athlete NIL Litigation and
Hubbard v. National Collegiate Athletic Association settlements.
Key Deadlines
The final day to submit the necessary documentation is
January 31, 2025. Athletes can complete their submissions online at
collegeathletecompensation.com. This is an important step for those seeking financial compensation from the class action settlements that could make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Who Qualifies for Payments?
Payments are set to be automatically disbursed to athletes, but certain conditions must be met:
- - Power Five FBS Football and Men's Division I Basketball athletes who received full grants-in-aid for broadcast NIL awards, videogame NIL awards, athletic services awards, and awards for lost third-party payments for NIL, provided they have supplied NIL deal details to the plaintiffs through their schools.
- - Power Five Women's Division I Basketball athletes under the same terms as mentioned above but tailored to their specific awards.
- - Any Division I athlete who has been part of a team in the same sport both before and after July 1, 2021, and has received third-party NIL payments post this date, also contingent upon their school reporting these details to the plaintiffs.
- - Athletes from Power Five and Big East basketball teams who participated during any part of the academic years 2019-2020, 2020-2021, or 2021-2022.
Eligibility Considerations
Athletes who do not fall in the categories listed above but still wish to claim compensation under these settlements need to file a Claim Form. Specifically, the following groups must look into their eligibility:
- - Division I athletes outside the Power Five full grant-in-aid scope who want to claim payments for their participation in college sports from 2019 to 2024.
- - Football or Men's Basketball athletes not in the Power Five looking to receive payments for videogames from 2016 to 2024.
- - Division I athletes who were participants in their sport around July 1, 2021, needing NIL deals filed post that date that haven’t already been provided to the plaintiffs by their schools.
- - Those competing in Division I athletic teams that are not basketball teams in the Big East or teams in Power Five conferences during the aforementioned academic years.
Background on Settlements
These payments stem from settlements resulting from class-action lawsuits claiming the NCAA and Power Five Conferences violated antitrust laws. The allegations included not providing benefits and compensation to college athletes for their contributions in college sports, limiting scholarships, and failing to recognize their academic achievements.
As reiterated by
Steve Berman, managing partner at Hagens Berman, and
Jeffrey L. Kessler, co-executive chairman at Winston Strawn, “We strongly encourage NCAA college athletes to participate before time runs out. They have waited far too long to reap the benefits of this historical, life-changing settlement.”
It is critical for any eligible athlete to act swiftly and ensure their claim is submitted by the deadline to avoid missing out on this unprecedented opportunity for compensation.
