Atelier Seiran, a renowned textile studio based in Tokushima, Japan, is set to hold a captivating series of talks at the prestigious Venice Biennale on September 22 and 23, 2026. The event, themed "From Indigo to the World -- The Spirit and Creativity of Japanese Culture," is part of the official program of the 61st Venice Biennale and will take place at the stunning Palazzo Dona dalle Rose.
The series of discussions aims to delve into the cultural philosophy that underpins the work of Atelier Seiran, exploring how Japan's deep connection to nature influences its aesthetic sensibilities and creativity. Founded in 1970 by Yoko Hashimoto, a master of Awa indigo, the studio has cultivated a unique approach that combines traditional indigo dyeing with wax resist techniques known as Roketsuzome. Today, Yoko's daughters, Hatsuko Ukigawa and Kiyoko Hashimoto, carry forward this colorful heritage while also integrating contemporary forms of artistic expression into their work.
Hatsuko Ukigawa, who leads the Atelier, will deliver two key lectures that highlight the studio's artistry within a broader cultural context. One of the highlights of the program will be "Les Lucioles" (The Fireflies), a collaborative piece born out of a partnership between Ukigawa and Cameroonian designer Serge Mouangue, showcasing the potential of Japanese indigo to transcend cultural boundaries.
"Venice has always been a crossroads where East meets West," stated Atelier Seiran. "Through indigo, we hope to open a new dialogue that expresses not just a color but the culture and spirit behind it."
The talks will run daily from 2 PM to 5 PM and are scheduled within the framework of the exhibition titled "Fissures of Light Diaspora Dissonances in Fa Minor." Other partners for the event include TISSALI Arts Cultures, with planned support from companies like MetaMoJi Corporation and the Shoshin Foundation.
