Significant Investment by Louisiana First Horizon Foundation to Enrich Louisiana Music Museum
Louisiana First Horizon Foundation's Major Contribution to Louisiana Music Museum
In a remarkable step towards preserving Louisiana's vibrant musical heritage, the Louisiana First Horizon Foundation has announced a pivotal investment in the Louisiana Music Museum. This initiative, which is part of the Acadiana Center for the Arts, is designed to advance the development of a cultural and educational landmark in Downtown Lafayette.
The Foundation's financial support plays a critical role in the museum's ongoing capital campaign. One of the highlights of this partnership includes naming recognition for the newly proposed Walk of Legends Plaza. This outdoor entrance area, located on South Buchanan Street, is intended to celebrate the influential artists and the cultural significance of Louisiana's musical legends.
Jerry Prejean, the Acadiana Market President for First Horizon, commented on the importance of this project. He emphasized that Louisiana's music forms an essential part of both the culture and identity of the state. By investing in the Louisiana Music Museum, the Foundation aims to preserve this rich legacy for future generations. The museum will not only honor the artists and traditions that shape Louisiana's unique cultural identity but will also generate new educational, tourism, and economic opportunities within the community.
Situated in the historic Lafayette Hardware Store from 1890, the Louisiana Music Museum is set to immerse visitors in Louisiana’s musical history through engaging exhibits, storytelling, and educational programs. The exhibits will cover a wide range of musical styles—from Cajun and Creole to jazz, blues, zydeco, gospel, funk, and beyond—highlighting various influential artists and the evolution of musical genres that define Louisiana's sound.
“The Louisiana Music Museum is about much more than just preserving our musical roots,” remarked Samuel Oliver, Executive Director of the Acadiana Center for the Arts. “It will breathe life into the stories, traditions, and creativity that have shaped Louisiana's cultural identity for generations. We aim to create a space that not only celebrates our musical heritage but also inspires the next generation.”
Construction work on the museum is projected to begin in 2027, with the grand opening scheduled for 2028. This timeline marks a significant milestone for both the Foundation and the Acadiana Center for the Arts, as they aim to transform Downtown Lafayette into a vibrant hub for cultural appreciation and education.
The Louisiana First Horizon Foundation, as a charitable organization of First Horizon National Corporation, was established in 2020. Since its inception, it has donated over $15 million to address various community needs. The grants spearheaded by the Foundation focus on several impact areas, including arts and culture, education and leadership, environmental initiatives, financial literacy, and health and human services. More information regarding the Foundation’s initiatives can be found on their official website.
In addition to the music museum, the Acadiana Center for the Arts also plays a crucial role in promoting arts and culture in the region. It is dedicated to providing enriching artistic experiences to the community through public concerts, art exhibitions, grants to artists and cultural organizations, and educational activities in schools across the Acadiana area.
As the Louisiana Music Museum prepares to take shape in the coming years, the hopes of many are pinned on its potential to expand cultural tourism, foster education in the arts, and celebrate the unique musical heritage that makes Louisiana so distinctive. This investment is not just an addition to Lafayette; it’s a dedication to honoring the past while paving the way for a future rich in music, culture, and creativity.
