Okayama University Plays a Pivotal Role in Okayama Art Exchange 2025
The National University Corporation Okayama University, located in Okayama City, has announced its collaboration with the upcoming
Okayama Art Exchange 2025, a triennial international exhibition dedicated to contemporary conceptual art. This highly anticipated event is scheduled to run from
September 26 to November 24, 2025. The university’s faculties of science and engineering are actively contributing to the creation of exhibits that will featured numerous works from renowned artists, including the esteemed filmmaker and artist
Verena Paravel.
Each participating researcher lends a unique perspective through their scientific expertise. Assistant Professor Mitsuki Katsuhara from the Applied Ecology course, Professor Mayuko Hamada in evolutionary biology, Professor Makiko Mimura in ecology, and Professor Daishi Yoshii in chronobiology have provided an array of biological materials for the installation, including
Drosophila melanogaster (the common fruit fly) and
Loligo (a species of squid). These specimens are expected to create a stunning auditory and visual experience, capturing the minute sounds and movements of these organisms that often go unnoticed in daily life.
The collaboration between science and art highlights the innovative spirit of Okayama University and aims to enhance public engagement with scientific research through accessible artistic presentations. The audiovisual displays promise to invoke a sense of wonder as they depict the delicate intricacies of life forms in vivid detail, fostering both aesthetic enjoyment and educational value.
During the exhibition period, attendees will have the opportunity to view Verena Paravel’s groundbreaking visual works at the
Tenjin-cho Cultural Plaza in Okayama Prefecture, free of charge. This act of presenting research materials in an artistic format aims to bridge gaps between the public and scientific communities, making complex biological concepts more relatable and straightforward.
