Enjoy the New Tsukiji Honganji Coffee Blend

Introduction
A special blend of coffee, named after the 9th chief priest of Tsukiji Honganji, Myoken Hayama, will be officially released on December 11, 2025. This exquisite coffee blend will be available exclusively at the Tsukiji Honganji Cafe Tsumugi and its branch at Tsukiji Honganji Cafe Tsumugi Hanalé in Tsukishima, Tokyo.

The blend primarily features high-quality coffee beans sourced from Brazil, a country historically linked to the migration of many Japanese people. The flavor profile of this coffee is designed to offer a harmonious balance of moderate bitterness and fruity acidity, allowing drinkers to enjoy the coffee’s original richness and aromatic qualities.

About the Tsukiji Honganji Coffee

The Tsukiji Honganji Coffee is an original blend that embodies a deep historical connection with the Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect, to which the temple belongs. After the initial Japanese immigrants set sail to Brazil in 1908, many found work on coffee farms. This connection to coffee has been nurtured over the years, making it a core part of the community’s heritage.

Myoken Hayama, the overseeing authority of this new coffee blend, wishes for every cup to serve as a moment of reflection, allowing individuals to reminisce about their past experiences—both joyous and sorrowful. As he beautifully puts it, he hopes that coffee drinkers will appreciate “this moment of happiness in their lives.”

Tsukiji Honganji's Rich History

The Tsukiji Honganji Temple, affiliated with the main temple in Kyoto, was established to create a welcoming place for worshippers. The current hall is designed in a style reminiscent of ancient Buddhist architecture and was completed in 1934. The blend of traditional and western influences can be found throughout, creating a soothing environment.

In 2017, Tsukiji Honganji further embraced its role as an inclusive community space by launching an Information Center that features a cafe and shop, making it a haven for over 3 million visitors annually.
