Uniting for Safety: MADD's Mission During the World Cup
With the FIFA World Cup generating immense enthusiasm across North America, MADD Canada and MADD are collaborating to deliver a powerful message: celebrate responsibly and never drive while impaired. From Los Angeles to Toronto, the spirit of the tournament transcends borders, and so does the commitment to safety.
A Collective Responsibility
The World Cup captivates millions, bringing together fans in stadiums, bars, and homes to support their teams. However, many of these celebrations include the consumption of alcohol, cannabis, and other substances that impair driving. MADD is calling upon everyone to prepare in advance, designating a sober driver, using rideshares or public transport, and watching out for one another.
Impaired driving continues to be a major issue, causing thousands of injuries and fatalities each year in both Canada and the United States. In 2024, statistics indicated that 25% of drivers involved in fatal accidents in Canada were impaired, and in the U.S., 30% of traffic fatalities were linked to alcohol-impaired driving. Each of these tragic incidents could be avoided with proper planning and a safe ride home.
Sporting Events and Safety: An Unbreakable Link
Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of MADD, emphasizes the unifying power of sports: "This sport has an incredible ability to unite people across borders, languages, and cultures. Our collective responsibility is to ensure safety on the roadways as we welcome international guests to North America for this grand event." With the vibrant atmosphere of the World Cup, fans must prioritize their safety alongside their enthusiasm.
Tanya Hansen Pratt, National President of MADD Canada, stated, "The World Cup is creating extraordinary moments across our continent, and we want those moments to end with everyone arriving home safely." The message remains consistent across every venue and event: plan ahead before celebrating and ensure that impaired driving is not part of the experience.
Partners in Safety
MADD is working with local businesses and venues to highlight the importance of road safety during the tournament. As cities extend bar hours to accommodate celebrants, MADD urges fans to keep safety at the forefront.
"Whether before the kickoff, after the final whistle, or late into the night, our message is clear: if you’re impaired, do not get behind the wheel," Stewart reiterated. Fans are encouraged to take advantage of rideshare services or public transportation to ensure safe travels home.
The stakes are high during the World Cup, with millions celebrating this global event. By prioritizing sober driving, fans can enhance their experience, ensuring that they can continue supporting their favorite teams safely.
