Capitainer Advances Clinical Studies for HbA1c Testing in the U.S.
Capitainer, a leading company in volumetric microsampling solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in its regulatory journey within the United States. The company has successfully collected its first clinical sample as part of a study focusing on HbA1c, a critical marker used to evaluate long-term blood glucose levels in individuals. This study is crucial in supporting Capitainer's plan to submit a 510(k) application to the FDA, aiming for increased recognition and approval of their innovative blood testing solutions.
The study is set to involve a minimum of 120 participants, wherein both autonomous and assisted capillary blood collection methods utilizing the Capitainer®B50 device will be assessed. The results obtained from this novel sampling technique will be cross-referenced with those collected via traditional venipuncture, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness and reliability of the Capitainer method.
The analysis of the collected samples will be conducted by Three Rivers Diagnostics and Aegis Sciences Corporation, leveraging advanced laboratory instrumentation from Roche, further underscoring the scientific rigor behind the study. Data collection is anticipated to wrap up by November 2026, marking an exciting phase in the exploration of alternative blood collection methods.
Christopher Aulin, CEO of Capitainer, expressed the significance of reaching this milestone: “This milestone is an important step in our continued development in the U.S. market. We see significant opportunities for microsampling technology to support more accessible blood testing and help healthcare providers address gaps in care. This study represents an important part of our long-term strategy to expand the clinical applications of our technology.”
Founded in 2016, Capitainer AB has been at the forefront of developing patient-centered solutions for self-sampling of biological fluids, such as blood, plasma, and urine. The company has created specialized cards designed to collect and dry precise volumes of fluid, allowing these samples to be sent conveniently through standard postal services to laboratories for testing without the complexities of cold chain logistics or specialized packaging.
Capitainer’s offerings stand out in the market for their accuracy and precision, matching traditional pipetting methods in performance. Their technology caters to multiple sectors, including clinical biomarkers, therapeutic drug monitoring, genomics, doping testing, and clinical research.
Although the Capitainer®B50 is classified as a Class I in vitro diagnostic device by the FDA, its use for HbA1c testing is currently being investigated and has not yet received FDA clearance for this specific application. The outcome of this study will be pivotal in determining the device's potential for FDA approval and its subsequent market introduction in the United States.
In conclusion, Capitainer's ongoing clinical research underscores a broader trend toward enhanced accessibility and efficiency in healthcare testing methodologies. As the world increasingly embraces remote and user-friendly health solutions, Capitainer's pioneering efforts are set to revolutionize the landscape of blood glucose monitoring, making it simpler and more efficient for individuals to manage their health effectively.
