Shanghai Electric Signs Major Contract for Renewable Energy Progress in Romania

Shanghai Electric Initiates Phase II of Solar Project in Romania

A Major Contract Signed for 342MW Photovoltaic Initiative

On October 1, 2025, Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 2727, SSE: 601727) announced a significant advancement in its renewable energy endeavors by signing a general contracting agreement for the second phase of its Parau photovoltaic project, tapping into 342MW of solar energy. This project is in collaboration with Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd. and aims to deliver sustainable electricity to both residential and commercial sectors in Romania, showcasing Shanghai Electric's commitment to promoting green energy development in Central and Eastern Europe.

"Shanghai Electric is ready to continue supporting the green transformation of the region through our technological strengths in wind and solar energy, as well as energy storage solutions," stated Wu Lei, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shanghai Electric Group. The company's initiative is not just about completing projects; they aspire to enhance their presence in Central and Eastern Europe and provide tailored solutions that expedite Romania's energy transformation.

Contributing to Regional Growth

Econergy's Vice President for Operations, Andrea Loi, emphasized that partnering with Shanghai Electric demonstrates their full confidence in the latter’s technical expertise and extensive international experience in project execution. The collaboration is expected to ensure the smooth progress and successful implementation of this ambitious project.

Phase II of the Parau project is the fourth solar initiative by Shanghai Electric in Romania, following the successful launch of Phase I, which generates 91.4 MW and currently supplies green electricity to approximately 70,000 households. This effort has contributed significantly to reducing carbon emissions in Romania by around 6,800 tons annually.

The growth of Shanghai Electric’s project portfolio in Romania now totals around 550 MW as of October 2025. This expansion marks a significant stride toward sustainable energy development in the country. Other notable projects include the completion of a 56MW project in Schultu, and the ongoing construction of a 60MW project in Ovidiu, underscoring Shanghai Electric's pivotal role in the renewable energy sector of Romania.

Strategic Meetings and Future Partnerships

On the day of the contract signing, Wu Lei met with the Chinese Ambassador to Romania, Chen Feng, and Istvan-Lorant Antal, the Chairman of the Romanian Energy Committee. During their discussions, Antal highlighted Romania's active approach to transforming its energy structure, particularly in photovoltaic technology, energy storage, gas turbines, and the transmission and distribution of energy. He expressed optimism for deeper cooperation with outstanding companies such as Shanghai Electric in joint renewable energy project developments.

Moreover, Wu Lei held high-level discussions with representatives of the Austrian OMV Group to explore new partnership opportunities in the energy sector. This dialogue aims to enhance Shanghai Electric's crucial role in Romania's energy transformation agenda.

In summary, the Phase II solar project at Parau not only represents an important achievement for Shanghai Electric and Econergy but also reflects the broader shift toward renewable energy in Romania. With strategic partnerships and substantial investments in clean energy technologies, both companies are poised to lead the way in fostering a sustainable energy future for the region.
