Vale Base Metals Expands Copper Production with Innovative Coarse Particle Flotation Project
Vale Base Metals (VBM), a premier global supplier of essential minerals, has made significant strides in its operations with the announcement of the Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF) project at its Salobo Copper Complex located in Brazil. This initiative is poised to revolutionize the company's processing capabilities and yield extraordinary economic benefits. With an impressive projection of adding approximately 30,000 tonnes of annual copper production and a remarkable increase in annual ore processing capacity of 6 million tonnes, the CPF project promises to elevate Salobo's profile as a key player in the copper market.
The commencement of this ambitious project has been moved up, with the targeted start-up now set for the first half of 2028, marking a full year ahead of the original schedule. This acceleration is indicative of VBM's refined construction strategy and organizational restructuring that prioritize efficiency and project execution. CEO Shaun Usmar emphasizes the uniqueness of VBM's capability to maximize value and growth from its world-class assets through strategic execution and innovative technology.
The CPF project, classified as a brownfield expansion, aims to utilize the existing infrastructure at Salobo, minimizing execution risks while enhancing the operation's overall efficiency. With Salobo being Brazil’s largest copper operation, this initiative will not only alleviate current grinding bottlenecks but also enhance metallurgical recoveries, thus increasing overall throughput. Notably, this technological advancement is expected to lower the environmental footprint of the operation by utilizing less energy and water than traditional methods.
As part of the strategic planning for the Salobo mine, VBM anticipates a 7% uptick in total mine movements, largely attributed to the introduction of autonomous haulage technology. The company has also secured its construction license ahead of schedule from Brazil’s environmental authority, IBAMA, allowing for earlier implementation of the CPF project.
In terms of financing, Wheaton Precious Metals has stepped in to support this venture with a $40 million investment, which will be distributed in two installments tied to specific project milestones. This funding comes as a substitution for anticipated annual payments that would have been required under an existing streaming agreement. The project capital expenditure has been optimized, with the revised estimate now at approximately $215 million; however, with Wheaton's financial assistance, VBM's net capital outlay is projected to be about $175 million. This low capital intensity, valued at $5,000 - $6,000 per copper equivalent tonne, is significantly below industry averages, underscoring the project's economic viability.
As VBM continues to innovate, its research and development efforts surrounding the CPF methodology date back over two years. Extensive lab testing at the Sheridan Park Research Facility in Canada and collaborations with industry experts have informed the project's design. Field testing in Brazil's Carajás region is already enhancing operational training and providing crucial insights for future developments.
The CPF project is not just a testament to VBM's current operational excellence but also a glimpse into its future growth strategy, which is geared to enhance its copper production to about 700,000 tonnes annually by 2035. This strategy is strongly supported by VBM’s extensive mineral reserves, which exceed 53 million tonnes of contained copper.
In summary, as Vale Base Metals embarks on this groundbreaking CPF project at Salobo, the company demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and capital efficiency in an increasingly competitive copper market. This initiative marks a significant milestone not only for VBM but also for the global copper supply chain, which finds itself at a critical juncture regarding production and environmental concerns. Given the anticipated advancements and the fruitful synergy between VBM and Wheaton, the future for the Salobo copper operation looks exceptionally promising.
