First Inclusive Design Workshop Brings Together Those Affected by Diseases and Developers

Bridging Gaps Through Co-Creation

On February 7, 2026, the inaugural workshop titled "Opening Up Creation" took place in Nihonbashi, marking a significant milestone in inclusive design. The event was organized by the AnyOne Project, a Tokyo-based non-profit led by Yuki Kozaki, which advocates for a society where individuals with and without illnesses can live equally and freely.

The workshop brought together twelve participants, six of whom were individuals affected by various illnesses, including chronic conditions and disabilities, and six were product developers from sectors ranging from food to e-commerce. Instead of merely soliciting opinions, the workshop transformed the lived experiences of participants into powerful insights for product development.

Participant Feedback and Satisfaction

Attendees were thrilled with the outcome, as reflected in a participant survey that indicated 100% satisfaction, broken down into 54.5% reporting “very satisfied” and 45.5% “satisfied.” Many highlighted the value of diverse perspectives. Comments included:
  • - "I appreciated the shared viewpoints from various backgrounds."
  • - "This experience reaffirmed my desire to focus on what I can do, rather than what I cannot due to my condition."
  • - "I hope initiatives like this will continue and expand, allowing the voices of individuals with illnesses to be implemented in tangible products."

This initiative was covered in TBS Radio's Saturday Summary segment, showcasing the dialogues that took place and the rising interest in collaborative inclusive design.

Insights from the Participants

Kozaki noted that individuals facing illnesses often recognize unmet needs that others might overlook. For example, a map app designed for individuals with disabilities ultimately benefits parents with strollers, seniors, and others. This understanding emphasizes the importance of incorporating participant feedback from the inception of the design process to enhance speed and efficiency while minimizing waste.

During the workshop, many participants found common ground despite differing perspectives. The structure encouraged open discussions about everyday items they prioritize, revealing shared challenges and values among individuals from varying backgrounds—demonstrating that everyone faces inconveniences.

Creating Ideas Together

Small groups brainstormed ideas for products that could improve daily life, facilitating discussions that expanded beyond specific disabilities. Insights flowed from the concept of “Wouldn’t it be great if...” discussions, leading to universally applicable ideas. Each group's presentations showcased not just thoughts on products but realizations linked to their lifestyle—to parenting or work—which further enriched the dialogue.

Even within a diverse assembly of participants, the common theme was clear: everyone shares unique struggles, yet recognizes that solutions can benefit all. Developers expressed their surprise at the shared experiences of inconvenience and found the workshops enlightening and beneficial for their future work.

Next Steps in Co-Creation

Looking ahead, the AnyOne Project aims to make this workshop a recurring event, with the next session planned for June. They are inviting organizations interested in participating to reach out for more details. Additionally, they offer support in conducting research and interviews with patients and families to assist companies in conceptualizing new products and services.

The project is committed to fostering an environment where everyone can share their experiences and ideas without judgment, creating opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

The ultimate goal: to bring voices from the margins of society into the heart of user-centered design, helping to shape a future where inclusivity is the norm and everyone’s needs are addressed. This growing movement encapsulates the essence of Kozaki's vision: that the differences in our experiences can lead to shared benefits.
