Rossing Marathon: A Celebration of Friendship Between China and Africa

The 35th Rossing National Marathon: Celebrating International Unity

On a vibrant Saturday morning, the picturesque coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia, hosted the 35th Rossing National Marathon. Here, the Chinese National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), alongside Namibian representatives, organized an event that symbolized the collaborative spirit and friendship between China and Africa. This marathon has become a hallmark for the region, fostering goodwill while promoting sport and community involvement.

With nearly 5,000 participants registering on-site, the 2026 event set a new record for attendance, marking a significant moment in the marathon's history. This year’s breakdown of events included multiple categories: 5km, 10km, half marathon, and full marathon. Participants, hailing from diverse backgrounds—ages, nationalities, and more—made their way through the scenic course, embodying the essence of determination and sportsmanship.

In a groundbreaking twist, the marathon also featured virtual participation through the Codoon fitness app, enabling over 40,000 runners from China to join in remotely. This innovative approach of combining on-site and virtual participation expanded the event's reach and engagement, illustrating how technology can bridge distances and foster community.

Set against a stunning backdrop where the Atlantic Ocean meets the sweeping Namib Desert, the marathon course itself was a conversation starter. Runners were treated to a colorful cultural experience at a themed refreshment station established by the Chinese team. Here, energetic staff donned traditional attire, showcasing dragon dance performances and drumming, evoking a spirit of celebration and cultural exchange. The distinctive atmosphere even drew spectators who gathered not just to cheer on runners, but also to engage with the vibrant expressions of Chinese culture along the course.

This year’s marathon embodied a spirit of unity and camaraderie, with participants from 23 countries gathering to experience the joy of running in an international setting. A runner from Zimbabwe reflected on her experience, stating, “The breathtaking landscapes connecting desert and ocean were remarkable, but the warm smiles and spirited drumbeats will stay with me long after this marathon.” Such sentiments echo the universal language of sports—an enduring connection that transcends geographical boundaries.

As Namibia's Rossing Uranium Mine celebrates its 50th anniversary with an emphasis on corporate social responsibility, the event served as more than just a race. According to Johan Coetzee, managing director of the mine, the Rossing Marathon is pivotal in promoting cultural integration, healthy living, and stronger ties among participating nations. By leveraging this community platform, organizers are hopeful to sustain these connections and nurture a culture of health and friendship going forward.

With the ongoing push from CNNC that aligns with the Belt and Road Initiative, efforts are being made to explore sustainable practices while further developing mutual respect between China and Namibia. These ambitions underscore not only a transformative impact on the mining sector but also an enduring strength in international relations through sports.

Moving forward, the Rossing National Marathon promises to uphold its resolve to not only be a sporting event but a grand bridge connecting the heart of diverse cultures through shared dreams and aspirations on the path of friendship. This marathon stands as a testament to the unyielding spirit of those who dare to cross both literal and metaphorical mountains, exemplified in their physical efforts to run together across continents, fostering relationships that support harmony and robust community ties.
