14-Year-Old Kirara Suzuki Cast as Lead in Musical 'Anne of Green Gables'

In an exciting development for the world of Japanese musical theater, 14-year-old Kirara Suzuki has been announced as the lead in the musical adaptation of 'Anne of Green Gables.' Produced by IMAGINE, this production will kick off its nationwide tour on July 19, 2026, in Kagoshima, visiting 15 cities across the country with a total of 17 performances.

The show features 14 private performances sponsored by House Foods Corporation, along with three general performances organized by the Family Musical Association. The cast includes renowned actors such as Yuki Matsumura, who has starred in notable TV dramas like 'Seito Shokun!' and recent musicals like 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical.' Other prominent talents include former Takarazuka Revue members, Nail Mitzia and Rira Maikaze, representing the best of Japan’s musical scene.

Kirara, hailing from Nagano Prefecture, has been honing her craft since childhood, studying piano, classical ballet, jazz dance, tap dance, and voice. Her innate talent has been consistently recognized, winning accolades in various competitions, including the Nagano City Children's Culture and Arts Award during the 6th and 8th years of the Reiwa era.

Her selection for the role of Anne Shirley came after a competitive audition process, where she impressed the judges not only with her singing, dancing, and acting abilities but also with her capacity to embody Anne's imaginative spirit, vibrant energy, and authentic charm. The essence of Anne Shirley, which cannot be conveyed solely through technical skill, resonated with the judges, leading to Kirara being entrusted with this significant role at such a young age.

To understand the significance of Kirara's casting, one must look back at the illustrious history of actors who have played Anne Shirley in past productions of 'Anne of Green Gables.' The role has been held by numerous celebrated performers, including Erika Yamakawa (2003-2004), Tomomi Kahala (2005-2006), Hitomi Shimatani (2007-2011), Sayaka Kanda (2012), Ai Takahashi (2013-2014), Mone Kamishiraishi (2015), Moka Kamishiraishi (2016), Karen Miyama (2017-2018), and Reina Tanaka (2019-2022). Kirara now carries this powerful legacy forward.

As rehearsal began this June, Kirara expressed the nervous excitement of stepping into Anne Shirley's shoes. "I feel nervous every day," she shared with a smile, yet when the rehearsal commenced, it was evident that the character of Anne had truly come to life on stage.

With her vibrant imagination, bright eyes, and shifting expressions, Kirara naturally embodies Anne Shirley. Observers noted her ongoing development, not just in performance skills but also in how her own personality gradually seemed to blend with Anne's essence.

What started as an anxious experience for Kirara on the first day of rehearsal has transformed day by day, leading to a clear resolve and confidence as she prepares to take on the iconic role. Rather than merely acting, she is growing alongside Anne, facing challenges, laughter, and shared experiences throughout their journey across 17 performances.

This transformation will undoubtedly resonate profoundly with audiences, each moment etched in their hearts.
