Embracing the Future: The Role of Space Business in Regional Development
Japan's space industry is experiencing a surge in interest and investment from numerous companies and organizations seeking to capitalize on the growth of related businesses. In response to this trend, Technos College, a prominent educational institution in Tokyo, has initiated a specialized course beginning in 2025 focused on “Space Business.” This course aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for careers in the rapidly expanding space sector.
The theme for this year’s seminar is “How to Achieve a Sustainable Spaceport City?” Educator Hidetaka Aoki, co-founder and CEO of the SpacePort Japan non-profit organization, has been invited to teach and lead discussions surrounding the space industry. Students not only gained theoretical knowledge but also engaged in hands-on fieldwork in Taiki Town, Hokkaido, which is at the forefront of developing the Hokkaido Spaceport (HOSPO).
Throughout their studies, students explored various local initiatives that intertwine the space industry with other sectors such as energy, dairy farming, and commerce. Their findings offered a comprehensive understanding of how local governments and private enterprises can collaborate in launching space-related projects.
In January 2026, marking the culmination of their year-long efforts, the students presented business plans aimed at regional revitalization centered around the Hokkaido Spaceport to key stakeholders, including Aoki and other companies operating in the area. Each of the four student teams integrated their specialized knowledge to propose unique and impactful ideas, focusing on potential economic and social benefits.
The first group, Erimane, proposed a multi-faceted resort facility that includes a hotel designed for space travelers, an educational center for space-related skill development, a restaurant featuring space-themed cuisine, an arena for entertainment, and cutting-edge VR attractions. This innovative blend aims to attract a wide range of visitors to the region.
The second group, Gravity, suggested a new type of festival that combines local food offerings with educational workshops led by space industry professionals. This gathering would also feature booths showcasing local businesses and emphasize sustainability, creating an ongoing event that fosters community engagement and economic growth.
Hoshizoradan, the third team, envisioned an entertaining spaceport city comprised of a space theme park, a large shopping mall, and a resort hotel with observation decks for viewing rocket launches. This development aims to enhance the living environment, attract tourists, and generate significant economic impact for the area.
Finally, Team Ginga proposed the construction of GALAXY PARK, a community-oriented theme park that embodies the concept of a future space city. This initiative emphasizes collaboration between local initiatives, businesses, and government, positioning it as a broader project aimed at community development rather than a singular facility.
Technos College is committed to fostering innovative educational initiatives by collaborating with various companies and local governments to integrate cutting-edge knowledge across disciplines in its programs. The “2025 University Course Seminar” represents a significant step towards bridging education and the burgeoning field of space business, preparing students to become future leaders in this exciting industry.
Interestingly, Hidetaka Aoki, the seminar instructor, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having obtained a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering and a Pilot's License in the United States. His background includes working as an engineer at Mitsubishi Electric, contributing to the development of the H-II Transfer Vehicle and the SLIM lunar lander, and he later earned an MBA. As a prominent player in space policy, Aoki has been involved with Japan’s space initiatives through various roles, including positions within the Cabinet Office and JAXA. His guidance is invaluable for students, providing a direct connection to the realities of the space business landscape.
Overall, the pioneering efforts of Technos College not only prepare students for careers in a crucial emerging industry but also contribute to the revitalization of regional communities through innovative thinking and collaborative initiatives. This intersection of education and business holds the promise of a dynamic future for both students and the communities they will serve.
