Groundbreaking Course Material Access Program Launched at University of Alberta for All Students

Follett of Canada Inc., recognized as Canada’s leading campus retailer, is set to make history with the introduction of Canada's very first campus-wide Course Material Access Program, beginning in Fall 2026 at the University of Alberta. This exciting initiative, often referred to as Total Access or Equitable Access, aims to provide all undergraduate students with immediate access to essential course materials from the very first day of classes.

The introduction of this program represents a significant commitment to simplifying the procurement process for course materials, thereby enhancing students’ academic success right from the outset. The initiative has garnered attention from students and faculty alike, in part due to its potential to level the playing field for everyone involved in higher education. Chad Saunders, the Group Vice President at Follett of Canada, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I’m a proud Canadian, and this is an exciting milestone for students and for higher education in Canada. With this program, the University of Alberta not only establishes a new standard for how course materials are distributed but also ensures that every student has access to the necessary resources needed to succeed."

Katherine Huising, the Associate Vice-President for Campus Services at the University of Alberta, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the program’s focus on eliminating obstacles that may impede student participation. "This initiative allows us to prioritize student success by making costs for course materials more predictable and affordable," said Huising.

With over a decade of experience running Access programs across more than 400 campuses throughout North America, Follett is well-equipped to support the University of Alberta’s new initiative. The company plans to integrate its established technology platform to facilitate the direct delivery of required course materials to students through the campus Learning Management System, ensuring access is granted on or before the start of classes.

Follett has a rich legacy of over 150 years in the educational arena, trusted by around 40 campuses in Canada and over 1,000 across the United States to promote student success through innovative solutions that cater to the learning journey.

This groundbreaking program not only signifies a pivotal moment for the University of Alberta but also sets an inspiring precedent for institutions across the country to follow. By prioritizing equitable access to educational resources, the University of Alberta is reaffirming its dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
