Tokyo Biennale 2025: Embracing Art and Community Through Walks
An exciting new chapter in the world of art is on the horizon as the Tokyo Biennale 2025 prepares to kick off from
October 17 to
December 14, 2025. This international art festival is set to promote a unique method of artistic exploration termed
'social dive', inviting attendees to delve into the various neighborhoods of Tokyo and discover the rich cultural tapestry that binds its residents together.
A Fresh Theme: Shall We Take a Walk Together?
In line with this year's theme,
“Shall We Take a Walk Together?”, the festival emphasizes the impact of both companionship and location on our relationships. This concept encourages people to connect in soft and nurturing ways through the act of walking, while also showcasing diverse artistic works centered around this very theme. With its main venues located at the historic
Tōeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple and
Étoile Kaito Living Hall, both steeped in centuries of history, the Biennale is positioned to offer a transcendent exploration of the essence of ‘taking a walk’.
Visitors are welcome to appreciate the profound experiences of walking in situ, or alternatively, they can traverse the six designated areas to truly immerse themselves in the
social dive philosophy. This festival invites interaction between individuals and the city, ultimately enriching the communal landscape.
A Message from the General Producer
General Producer,
Masato Nakamura, envisions a festival deeply rooted in the vibrant interactions of Tokyo. It embodies a mission of engaging intimately with the community, discovering new values, and creating art together. Nakamura highlights how the physical act of walking alongside someone—regardless of prior acquaintance—can foster mutual understanding and appreciation of one's surroundings. In the context of a world grappling with division, walking can be a catalyst for dialogue, cultivating interest in culture and history while fostering essential connections within the community.
The significance of celebrating Tokyo's “underlying culture”—a blend of historical knowledge, faith, creativity, and urban traditions—is emphasized. The Biennale will honor this heritage through detailed art projects, capturing it thoughtfully to invite reflection and future creation.
Three Distinct Features of Tokyo Biennale 2025
1. A Citizen-Led, Participatory Arts Festival
This festival aims to redefine what a biennale can be by allowing citizens to be the curators of their experience. Participants can craft their unique paths, examining works and engaging with what constitutes art in their own lives. Pre-event activities, including special lectures on the significance of walking, will provide participants with fresh perspectives.
2. Art Maps Connecting Realities
Traversing through the festival will be made easier and more enjoyable with the use of a specially-designed
art map. This illustrated guide will not only highlight prominent artworks but will also connect visitors with local cultural venues, public art, and unique facets of the neighborhood atmosphere.
3. Intersecting Local and Global Perspectives
The festival will also embrace global diversity featuring artists invited from various countries through initiatives like
“SOCIAL DIVE.” By bridging international and local contexts, the event seeks to unveil hidden narratives and cultural potential that often go unnoticed in daily life.
