Discover Tokyo's Autonomous Bus Trial
Tokyo’s transport authority is stepping into the future with an exciting trial for autonomous buses, scheduled from June 21 to June 29, 2023. The initiative aims to implement automated driving as part of a larger transportation strategy. This test will allow participants to ride the bus on a designated route, providing a unique opportunity to experience the future of public transport first-hand.
Details of the Trial
The autonomous bus trial will operate on an established bus route between
Shin-Kiba Station and the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Each journey will take approximately
30 minutes, showcasing how an automated system can function effectively in urban environments. It’s essential to note that this will be a Level 2 autonomous trial, meaning that while the bus will handle driving, a human operator will remain on board to ensure safety and manage any necessary manual driving tasks.
Schedule and Frequency
The trial will run for eight days, except on June 23 when the service will be suspended. During the operation period, there will be
four round trips each day, totaling
eight trips—four in the morning and four in the afternoon. Details such as the exact schedule and timings will be available soon on the specially designed webpage.
Vehicle Specifications
The bus used for this trial will be an
Isuzu ERGA, a large vehicle designed for urban transport. The Isuzu ERGA is built with a variety of features conducive to both passenger comfort and safety, making it an excellent choice for this innovative project.
Booking Your Ride
Reservations can be made via the dedicated webpage starting June 4 at 2 PM (on a first-come, first-served basis). The webpage will be launched on June 1 at 10 AM, enabling potential riders to secure their spots for this free experience. Participants are encouraged to take part in a short survey after their ride to provide feedback on the experience.
Additional Information
For more details on the operation times, boarding procedures, and other essential information, visiting the designated webpage is recommended. Contributions in the form of feedback after the experience will be greatly appreciated, assisting in refining future implementations of autonomous bus systems.
This trial aligns with Tokyo’s broader
2050 Tokyo Strategy, specifically focusing on enhancing infrastructure and transportation. It is part of a commitment to create sustainable urban environments and secure robust transportation resources for the future.
