Experience the Unique Dishes Exhibition at Suntory Museum

The Suntory Museum of Art in Roppongi, Tokyo, is excited to announce its upcoming exhibition titled 'Eye-Pleasing Dishes', which will take place from July 8 to August 30, 2026. This exhibition aligns with the museum's fundamental philosophy of enjoying the beauty found in everyday life, focusing on ceramics that date back to the early modern period, particularly the Momoyama to Edo periods.

A Look into the History of Japanese Tableware

About 400 years ago, it was common in Japan to seek and use various ceramic dishes from different regions, each with unique shapes, patterns, and purposes, especially during hospitality events. The exhibition aims to highlight this cultural practice and showcases how our ancestors used beautiful tableware to enhance their dining experiences, making meals not just about taste but also about visual enjoyment.

Highlighting vivid serving plates, elegant bowls, and uniquely designed dishes, visitors will discover that these ceramics often carried messages reflecting auspicious symbols, seasonal motifs, or desires to impress guests. Each piece acts as an 'eye feast' that, when combined with delicious cuisine, provides an even deeper joy for visitors.

A Blend of Local and Global Ceramics

The exhibition also sheds light on the broader interest of the Japanese in ceramics, which extends beyond domestic creations to include pieces from overseas, particularly from China. This diverse selection reflects the rich history of intercultural appreciation and consumption of ceramics in Japan.

As guests engage with the exhibition, they will not only appreciate the intricate designs of the dishes but also gain insight into the hospitality practices of the time, offering a unique perspective on how these beautiful pieces were utilized in the past.
