Blackbaud Unveils Free AI Certification Program to Enhance Social Impact Strategies

AI Coalition for Social Impact Launches Free Certification

In a groundbreaking move for organizations engaged in social work, the AI Coalition for Social Impact, convened by Blackbaud, has inaugurated a free AI for Social Impact Certification Program. This initiative aims to equip social impact practitioners with essential knowledge and skills about the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The first course, AI Fundamentals for Social Impact, is now available, introducing practitioners to the foundational aspects of AI, tailored specifically for enhancing their impact missions. According to Carrie Cobb, Chief Data and AI Officer at Blackbaud, `AI holds the potential for unprecedented mission acceleration, yet merely adopting technology won't suffice. Building maturity, investing in education, and implementing effective governance are vital.`

Recent findings published by the Blackbaud Institute reveal that a staggering 85% of nonprofit professionals are currently utilizing AI in their operations. Remarkably, about half of these organizations have increased their AI usage compared to the previous year. Despite this surge, only around 10% report achieving significant gains, underlining the crucial need for structured training like the certification program.

Course Structure

The certification program consists of a series of expert-led lessons designed to enhance the understanding and effective utilization of AI tools within social impact.

1. Foundations of AI
Led by Ari Kaplan, a recognized authority in the realm of digital transformation, this course offers a straightforward introduction to AI. Kaplan simplifies complex technical concepts for social impact professionals, diving deep into the history, evolution, and various types of AI in contemporary use. The focus here extends beyond basic knowledge to understanding AI's potential to amplify organizational missions.

2. Navigating AI Tools and Trends
Co-facilitated by Daniel Wallace and Dante Gabrielli from McKinsey & Company, this course provides a comprehensive overview of the current AI landscape, particularly its implications for social impact organizations. It identifies the reasons behind the slow pace of advancement for many and sheds light on how innovative tools are transforming work dynamics. The lessons emphasize actionable frameworks and real-world case studies aimed at guiding organizations through their AI maturity journey.

3. Understanding Generational Perspectives of AI
This insightful course, led by Dr. Laurene Currie, a Responsible AI Research Scientist at Blackbaud, examines how different age groups perceive and engage with AI technologies. By utilizing authentic research and case studies, Dr. Currie highlights the nuances of generational attitudes towards AI adoption within social impact sectors, providing strategies for organizations to effectively communicate and integrate AI across diverse demographic groups.

The AI Coalition for Social Impact aims to foster collaboration among leaders in philanthropy, technology, education, and corporate social responsibility. This certification program serves as its flagship initiative, emphasizing responsible AI use through shared standards and practical resources.

Looking ahead, a second course titled Responsible AI Principles and Regulations will be introduced later this year, further enriching the training options available to organizations. Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to register and learn more about the program at Blackbaud's certification page.
