About the Play
'Umio to' explores the fast-paced nature of contemporary society, focusing on individuals who often become overwhelmed by their ambitions. The narrative raises crucial questions about how people can maintain their kindness and awareness amidst personal desires. Through a compelling storyline, the play revisits real-life events to provoke thoughtful self-examination. The story follows Tamotsu, who once co-founded an IT company with his brother, Minato. Following Minato's allegations of embezzlement and subsequent disappearance, Tamotsu struggles with feelings of loss and responsibility.
As their father, who is suffering from terminal cancer, expresses a wish to file a death certificate for Minato, Tamotsu faces his brother's absence head-on while grappling with abandonment and betrayal. His sister, Yukari, believes in Minato's death and is eager to fulfill their father's wishes, but Tamotsu is reluctant, fighting against the hope that his brother may still be alive.
The tensions escalate following their father's death, where buried emotions within the family explode. Yukari's anger is directed at Tamotsu, forcing him to confront the lies and the guilt surrounding his brother's fate. This poignant exploration of loss and accountability is humorously interwoven with a narrative about the lessons of kindness and the complexities of human relationships.
