Teamsters at MBM Logistics Celebrate First Contract with Enhanced Benefits and Job Security
In a significant victory for workers at MBM Logistics—an essential third-party logistics provider for DHL Express—more than 100 employees have overwhelmingly ratified their initial contract with the Teamsters. This landmark agreement, which spans three years, introduces a range of substantial improvements including higher wages, fully paid employer healthcare, increased time off, and enhanced job security.
Walt Howard, the President of Teamsters Local 385, expressed pride in the negotiated agreement and the resilience shown by the new members amidst an intense anti-union campaign from management. He stated, "This contract delivers great wages, great benefits, and real job security that will allow these men and women to build a career at MBM."
The journey towards union representation for the MBM workers began last year when they voted to join Local 385. However, the path wasn't smooth; MBM's management responded to the unionization effort by spending significant amounts—reportedly tens of thousands of dollars—on anti-union consultants, who charged $375 an hour to undermine the workers' rights.
Antonio Talavera, a worker at MBM and a member of Local 385, highlighted the struggles the workers faced while coming together. "MBM management did everything possible to stop us from becoming Teamsters," said Talavera. "We stuck together and demanded what we have earned. It’s exciting to know that we are now protected by a Teamsters contract."
The newly ratified agreement represents a major step forward for the workers at MBM Logistics, who can now benefit from a newfound sense of security and support. The contract includes a substantial hourly wage increase of $5, along with the assurance of no-cost, fully employer-paid health care for all employees. Additionally, the agreement introduces expanded vacation time and the inclusion of seven new paid holidays.
Speaking on the corporate dynamics they had to navigate, Bill Hamilton, Director of the Teamsters Express Division, remarked, "These workers faced the gauntlet of corporate greed but never caved. They stood firm and demanded what they rightfully deserve. This is an excellent first contract that will deliver life-changing improvements for these workers and their families."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, currently represents approximately 1.3 million hardworking individuals across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The successful ratification of this contract signifies not just a win for MBM workers but also reinforces the important role of unions in advocating for fundamental worker rights and benefits.
