FDI Launches Generation Smile to Revolutionize Oral Health for Everyone

FDI's Generation Smile: A New Era in Oral Health

The FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) has recently launched a groundbreaking initiative called Generation Smile at the FDI World Dental Congress in Prague. This innovative movement aims to elevate oral health to a fundamental priority for everyone, regardless of their age, background, or culture. Described as a movement for all, Generation Smile seeks to not just promote dental care, but to embed oral health into the broader conversation about general well-being and health.

The Vision of Generation Smile

Generation Smile is built on the belief that collective change starts at an individual level. From brushing twice daily to regular dental visits, each person can contribute to a larger goal. The campaign’s mantra emphasizes that small, individual actions can collectively lead to significant global shifts in oral health awareness and practice. According to Dr. Anna Lella, Chair of the World Oral Health Day (WOHD) Working Group, the initiative aims to create healthier communities by fostering an environment where dental care is a shared responsibility.

Redefining Oral Health

The movement is not limited to just the physical aspects of oral hygiene. It aims to connect oral health with various life quality factors such as confidence and social well-being. Dr. Lella emphasizes that “the smile is not just an outcome; it is a symbol of what a healthy mouth can achieve.” By protecting oral health throughout life, the Generation Smile initiative hopes to enhance overall community health globally.

A Visual Identity Inspired by Street Art

In an effort to engage a broad audience, especially younger generations, Generation Smile has harnessed the universal appeal of street art. This bold new visual identity encourages global participation, inviting individuals to contribute to a shared digital mural. Through this artistic expression, participants can publicly affirm the significance of oral health, creating a community that visually represents collective commitment and support.

A Call to Action

“This campaign is an invitation,” says Assist. Prof. Dr. Nikolai Sharkov, President of FDI. “With Generation Smile, we want to offer people a shared platform to declare that their oral health matters.” Given that approximately 3.7 billion individuals worldwide are experiencing oral diseases, this movement is crucial. Each healthy choice, conversation, and inspirational story is a step toward fulfilling the FDI’s vision of a world where optimal oral health is the norm rather than the exception.

Building on World Oral Health Day

Generation Smile aligns perfectly with World Oral Health Day, which brings individuals, professionals, and policymakers together to further oral health initiatives. With the upcoming World Oral Health Day on 20 March 2027, individuals will be encouraged to partake in this global movement, ensuring that the right to oral health is recognized and accessible to all.

Overall, Generation Smile not only aspires to reshape individual perspectives on oral health but also aims to create a lasting legacy of well-being that will benefit future generations. As we approach its official launch, the movement stands as a testament to the power of unity and collective action in the fight for oral health.
