Celebrating 40 Years of Transformative Eye Care at NUH Ophthalmology

Celebrating Four Decades of Excellence in Eye Care at NUH

As the National University Hospital (NUH) marks a significant milestone—its 40th anniversary in the Ophthalmology department—it reflects on four decades of commitment to advancing eye care. Founded on a remarkable legacy of clinical expertise, the department has continued to lead in the treatment of complex eye conditions, ensuring that patients receive the highest quality of care.

Innovations in Patient Care

In recent developments, NUH has unveiled innovative services, including the Eye and Rheumatology in Adults (ERA) Combined Clinic, launched in April 2026, which integrates the efforts of ophthalmologists and rheumatologists to tackle complex inflammatory eye diseases. With two specialized services—designed for patients suffering from uveitis, a potentially sight-threatening condition—the clinic aims to create a comprehensive care pathway for patients who often require long-term immunomodulatory therapy (IMT).

The ERA Clinic reflects a unified approach where patients can meet both their eye and rheumatologic needs in a single visit. This streamlined care model not only improves patient experience but allows for immediate adjustments to treatment plans, reducing the necessity for multiple appointments. Patients can leave with a well-rounded care strategy, crafted in real-time with input from a multidisciplinary team that includes dual-trained eye surgeons and rheumatologists.

Groundbreaking Techniques

In another pioneering advancement, NUH has taken a significant leap forward with the introduction of dacryoendoscopy-guided Endoluminal Lacrimal Duct Recanalisation (ELDR). This minimally invasive technique restores normal tear drainage without the discomfort associated with traditional surgical methods. As one of the first institutions in Singapore to offer ELDR, NUH’s aim is to provide patients with a less invasive option, enhancing recovery times significantly.

Prior to this, patients often faced invasive surgeries requiring hospitalization. However, under the new model, the ELDR can be performed as an outpatient procedure, dramatically simplifying the patient journey and returning them to their daily activities more quickly. Since its introduction in 2023, the department has successfully treated over 50 patients through this innovative procedure.

A Milestone in Collaborative Learning

The 40th-anniversary celebrations also include the NUH International Ophthalmology Scientific Congress (IOSC) 2026. This congress, a gathering of over 374 delegates and 171 expert faculty from 31 countries, serves as a platform to share the latest advancements in ophthalmology. Holding this congress emphasizes NUH's role as a center for international collaboration in the field of eye care.

The event will also host the first European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) teaching course outside of Europe, further solidifying NUH’s position within the global ophthalmological community.

In light of these accomplishments, NUH Ophthalmology continues to pursue excellence in patient care, research, and professional education. Reinforced by a rich history and a commitment to the future, the department stands as a beacon of hope for patients, aiming to elevate the quality of life for generations to come.

Commitment to Patient-Centered Care

As NUH celebrates these achievements, it is essential to recognize the dedication of its healthcare professionals. Their efforts to reshape patient care, coupled with a focus on innovation, have transformed how eye care is delivered. The collaboration amongst various experts—from ophthalmologists to rheumatologists—highlights the commitment to nurturing comprehensive care.

Through rigorous training and cutting-edge techniques, NUH is not only addressing the needs of their patients but also setting standards for how multidisciplinary care should be delivered going forward.

By leveraging expertise in clinical practice and fostering a culture of continuous improvement, NUH Ophthalmology is, undoubtedly, prepared to meet the challenges of the future while providing unparalleled eye care services.
