PG&E's Match My Payment Program Offers Critical Energy Bill Relief Amid Ongoing Financial Struggles
In a concerted effort to support customers facing financial difficulties, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has launched the Match My Payment Program, which has successfully provided close to $30 million in matching payments to assist more than 78,000 customers with their overdue energy bills. The program, initiated just over a year ago, allows eligible low-to-moderate income households to access a dollar-for-dollar matching benefit of up to $1,000. This initiative aims to prevent energy service disconnections for those who are struggling to keep up with their bills.
Since its inception, the Match My Payment Program has expanded its reach significantly. In 2026, PG&E committed an additional $50 million to bolster relief efforts, which now includes the Relief for Energy Assistance through Community Help (REACH) program. The REACH initiative offers up to $800 in bill credits for qualified customers experiencing disconnection notices. Vincent Davis, PG&E's Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the crucial support this program offers, noting that many customers may not meet the eligibility requirements for other assistance options.
"The strong response over the past year shows the difference a dollar-for-dollar match can make for families who are behind on their energy bills," Davis stated.
The counties most supported by PG&E's efforts over the past year include Fresno, Kern, and San Joaquin, with combined distributions exceeding $12.5 million for those in need. Recipients of the Match My Payment can further enhance their support by making payments; for example, paying at least $50 on a past-due balance of $100 or more can yield multiple matches throughout the year. The eligibility for this program follows federal income guidelines, allowing a family of four earning less than $132,000 annually to qualify, which is notably higher than the limits set for the REACH program.
Additionally, PG&E encourages customers to explore other available programs that offer further assistance. These include California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) which provides substantial monthly discounts on gas and electricity, as well as the Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) program that extends electricity discounts regardless of household size. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers a one-time payment to aid low-income households with past-due bills, while the Arrearage Management Plan (AMP) assists qualifying residential customers with debt forgiveness.
Moreover, qualifying customers can also benefit from the Medical Baseline program, which enables patients who rely on electricity for medical purposes to receive an additional energy allotment at a lower rate. This proactive initiative requires a certification from a qualified medical practitioner to enroll.
For anyone interested in these programs, PG&E provides resources such as the free Savings Finder tool and detailed information available on their website at pge.com/billhelp. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that no one is left without the essential services they need, particularly in challenging economic times.
As funding for the Match My Payment Program is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, eligible customers are advised to act swiftly to secure their assistance while funds remain available. The partnership with Dollar Energy Fund (DEF) ensures that applications are processed efficiently to reach those in urgent need as quickly as possible. PG&E's ongoing commitment to supporting its customers through various relief programs underscores the importance of community resilience in overcoming financial hardships related to energy expenses.
