Celebrating 20 Years of Ai Takaoka: Awakening through New-Type Art Exhibition

Ai Takaoka, a distinguished calligrapher and artist, is set to hold a milestone exhibition titled 'Ai Takaoka 20th Anniversary Exhibition - Awakening - New-Type' in both Kyoto and Tokyo. This exhibition is not just a showcase of her artistic journey; it is a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, who was her lifelong mentor in calligraphy, koto, and shamisen.

Having lost her mother two years ago, Takaoka has poured her gratitude and prayers into this extensive body of work, taking over a year to create. The exhibition will feature around 50 pieces, including significant new works that utilize the 300-year-old traditional textile of her hometown, TANGO Chirimen. These pieces merge traditional methods with contemporary sensibilities, illustrating her unique artistic expression that reflects her decades-long journey.

For 20 years, Takaoka has adeptly incorporated the rich heritage of TANGO Chirimen into her artistry. Her journey has been one of continuous exploration and fusion of ancient techniques with modern flair, leading to what she describes as a 'new self' or 'new-type.' This exhibition embodies her ongoing evolution as an artist, contextualized through both personal loss and the cultural significance of her work.
