Experience a Rich Tapestry of Tradition at the Sumida Traditional Culture Festival

On July 11, 2026, the city of Sumida, Tokyo, witnessed the vibrant celebration of Japanese traditional culture at the Sumida Traditional Culture Festival, held at the Tachikawa Children's Hall. Organized by the Japan Folk Culture Promotion Association, led by the esteemed Chiharu Sato, the festival showcased a fusion of diverse cultural experiences, allowing families and children to engage with various forms of traditional Japanese art.

This event, part of the 'Sumida Traditional Culture Interaction Project 2026,' evolved from last year's Sumida Children's Folk Song Festival, expanding to include an array of traditional arts such as folk singing, shamisen performance, ikebana (flower arranging), poetry recitation, and kimono wearing. Approximately 60 families joined in the festivities, eagerly exploring each art form and discovering their individual interests.

Thrilling Live Performances

The festival kicked off with an exhilarating 'Waku Waku Traditional Culture Live' during the first half of the event. A lineup of impressive artists graced the stage, including folk singer Mitsuna Koyama, shamisen player Machiru Sawame, artist Hirari Nishida, dancer Yoshio Hanagyu, and poet Sakutake Abe. Their captivating performances filled the hall with the resonant sounds of folk songs and poetry, captivating the children and their families. The intimate setting allowed the audience to feel the intensity and energy of the live performances, creating an electrifying atmosphere. As the second half of the performance invited everyone to join in traditional dances, the participants eagerly came together, filling the space with joyous laughter and smiles.

Hands-On Cultural Experiences

The latter part of the event featured interactive experience booths, offering children the chance to immerse themselves in traditional arts like folk singing, shamisen, ikebana, poetry, and kimono wearing. This year introduced new activities; children engaged in arranging seasonal flowers during the ikebana experience, showing focused enthusiasm while creating their floral masterpieces under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Meanwhile, under the skilled teaching of award-winning poet Sakutake Abe, children tackled a poetry recitation workshop, learning unique intonations and vocal techniques. Although initially hesitant, the beaming smiles on their faces after successfully reciting a verse demonstrated a sense of accomplishment and joy.

In the shamisen workshop, children explored the beautiful sounds of the traditional instrument, carefully plucking the strings and experimenting with unique tones. The kimono experience allowed participants to don colorful traditional attire, where families joyfully took commemorative photos, cherishing the Japanese clothing culture. By the end of each activity, children received small gifts, ensuring a day filled with excitement and delight.

Positive Feedback from Participants

Feedback received through surveys highlighted the event's success, with many participants expressing enjoyment and gratitude for the rare opportunities provided. The festival evidently sparked a newfound interest in traditional Japanese culture among the children, showcasing its impact on their engagement and appreciation.

A Commitment to Cultural Continuity

The Sumida Traditional Culture Festival was organized to create accessible opportunities for local children to connect with Japan’s renowned cultural heritage. By expanding the program to include arts such as ikebana and poetry, the festival aimed to deepen children's exposure to diverse traditions, encouraging them to explore what they truly love. The project prioritizes not just teaching specific skills but exposing children to varied cultural experiences that may lead them to discover their personal interests. Following this event, a series of five workshops called the 'Sumida Traditional Culture Interaction Terakoya' will be launched starting July 31, 2026. These workshops aim to provide continuous learning opportunities, ensuring that cultural exploration endures beyond the festival. Additionally, incorporating the 'Folk Song Children’s Cafeteria' will create community spaces where kids can bond through food and culture. The Japan Folk Culture Promotion Association remains dedicated to fostering opportunities for communities where traditional arts are integrated into daily life, continuing the legacy of cultural transmission to future generations.

About the Project

The 'Sumida Traditional Culture Interaction Project' aims to bridge the gap between children and Japan’s rich cultural legacy. Through enriching experiences, the project nurtures children’s humanity and fosters deeper connections with local communities. However, increasing changes in family dynamics and lifestyle trends have limited children's exposure to traditional culture. The Sumida project was envisioned to address this gap, ensuring that the traditions that shape our identities are not lost.

This initiative is supported by the Sumida Ward as part of a collaborative program with the Agency for Cultural Affairs to promote traditional culture education.
