Cumulus Neuroscience and Transpharmation Join Forces for EEG Measurement Advancements
Cumulus Neuroscience and Transpharmation Partner for Enhanced EEG Measurement
Cumulus Neuroscience and Transpharmation have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at bridging the gap between preclinical research and first-in-human studies for central nervous system (CNS) drug development. The partnership focuses on objective EEG measurement to help drug developers transition their findings from animal models to human subjects.
Both companies are set to work closely with biopharma sponsors as they prepare to enter first-in-human studies. This initiative aligns the quantitative EEG (qEEG) endpoints derived from Transpharmation’s preclinical models with those evaluated using Cumulus’s NeuLogiq® Platform, enabling a seamless continuum of measurement throughout the developmental stages. An analysis presented in February 2026 demonstrated a conserved EEG signature of ketamine across several species, indicating the strength of this collaborative approach.
The CNS therapeutic landscape has a notoriously low success rate, with only 6.7% of candidates progressing from nonclinical development to FDA approval, as reported in JAMA Network Open (2024). This low probability can often be traced back to measurement inconsistencies that arise when transitioning from tightly controlled preclinical environments to the more heterogeneous and subjective nature of clinical trials. In preclinical settings, behavioral and electrophysiological data is gathered under strict conditions, while in clinical studies, the reliance on subjective symptom reporting can obscure valuable insights.
Objective EEG measurement offers a solution to this problem as it is quantitative, repeatable, and relevant to naturalistic behaviors. Transpharmation’s expertise includes a well-established sleep EEG and qEEG platform encompassing various animal models. They employ 26 endpoints benchmarked against clinical gold standards, drawing from significant research conducted by their founders in orexin and sleep pharmacology at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Concurrently, Cumulus boasts the NeuLogiq platform, which combines a wireless dry-EEG headset with gamified assessments adaptable for clinic and home use.
The collaboration eliminates the need for each company to scope parts of the program in isolation. By working together, Cumulus and Transpharmation can guide clients in selecting appropriate EEG paradigms during the preclinical phase, ensuring consistency with what will be measured in the clinic during later stages.
This partnership was formally announced during the 6th Annual Psychedelic Therapeutics Drug Development Conference held in New Orleans, where significant insights into the translational methodology were shared. Dr. John Huxter from Transpharmation highlighted the consistent, dose-dependent EEG signature observed in various models for ketamine, which matches clinical findings from a study conducted by Cumulus involving human volunteers.
Key findings underscored the direct correlation between pharmacological effects on EEG and biological responses—a critical aspect for developing effective CNS therapeutics. According to Dr. Mark Duxon, CEO of Transpharmation, the collaboration could streamline the design of preclinical EEG and behavioral assessments, thus aiding clients in planning the necessary endpoints before finalizing Phase 1 protocols.
To achieve continuity of measurement throughout clinical development, standardization of EEG deployment at scale is crucial. Cumulus’s NeuLogiq Platform is user-friendly for both non-expert clinical staff and patients, supporting rigorous assessments both in-clinic and through remote monitoring. This high-frequency longitudinal sampling can significantly aid in generating reliable data while alleviating the burdens on study sites.
Tina Sampath, CEO of Cumulus Neuroscience, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential. She emphasized that drug developers require a consistent and objective evidence stream that does not falter at the species boundary—a critical need in the CNS domain.
Cumulus's capability to monitor multiple domains of brain function offers invaluable advantages to CNS clinical trials for industry partners. As companies prepare for IND-enabling work or first-in-human study designs, they are encouraged to reach out for a joint scoping discussion to explore this innovative partnership further.
