SciBase Achieves Landmark Payer Coverage with Highmark, Advancing U.S. Expansion

SciBase Achieves Major Milestone with Highmark Coverage

In a groundbreaking advancement for dermatology, SciBase Holding AB has successfully secured its first positive medical policy from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of the largest healthcare organizations in the United States. This marks a significant turning point in SciBase's strategy for U.S. commercialization, particularly for its innovative technology, Nevisense. The approval shifts the reimbursement landscape for Nevisense, allowing it to move from a predominantly cash-pay arrangement to a covered care model under a major private insurer.

The recent decision by Highmark is expected to transform the accessibility of Nevisense technology in the U.S. market, reducing previously significant barriers to its broader adoption within dermatology practices. As it stands, SciBase has already developed a robust foothold in the U.S. without extensive private payer reimbursement; however, this new coverage unlocks new growth potential by expanding the patient base that can access the Nevisense technology in a reimbursed manner.

Pia Renaudin, the CEO of SciBase, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, *"This is a defining milestone for SciBase and an important step forward in the development of our U.S. business. Highmark coverage begins to remove one of the most important barriers to scale and creates the opportunity to reach a substantially larger portion of the U.S. market."

The U.S. Market Opportunity

The United States represents SciBase's largest commercial opportunity, with about 6,500 to 7,000 private dermatology clinics in operation. Of these, around 6,000 clinics are considered relevant for using Nevisense. Each year, an estimated 4 to 4.5 million skin biopsies are conducted, illustrating the substantial market potential for Nevisense in aiding dermatologists with the diagnosis of skin-related ailments.

Highmark’s decision highlights the company's commitment to addressing constraints on U.S. commercial scale and provides a pathway for converting existing clinical adoption into broader, reimbursed utilization. By allowing reimbursement for Nevisense when evaluating clinically atypical suspicious pigmented lesions, Highmark has not only expanded patient access but also reduced the financial barrier for many dermatologists incorporating this technology into their practices.

Details of the Coverage Policy

The policy established by Highmark stipulates that the EIS (Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy) is deemed medically necessary when dermatologists evaluate clinically atypical lesions and consider biopsies. To qualify for coverage, certain criteria must be met, including:

  • - The lesion must be part of a differential diagnosis for melanoma.
  • - It should be located on the trunk or extremities, measuring between 2 mm and 20 mm.
  • - Patients must be eighteen years or older.
  • - Lesions should not be located on mucosal surfaces, palms, soles, or nails, and must not be ulcerated, bleeding, or recently traumatized.
  • - The device used must be FDA-approved, utilized by a dermatologist trained in evaluating pigmented lesions clinically and dermoscopically.

This comprehensive coverage applies to all Highmark’s commercial insured lines of business and serves a significant number of self-funded employer groups, thereby amplifying Nevisense's usage across the United States.

Future Prospects

SciBase is committed to further engagement across the U.S. payer market as it continues to expand its commercial activities, particularly in regions where reimbursement is currently available. The company aims to leverage this coverage decision as a catalyst for accelerated growth and patient care access in dermatology.

By pioneering effective solutions that mitigate patient suffering and contribute to proactive skin health management, SciBase is positioned to make a lasting impact in the dermatological field. As the demand for non-invasive and reliable diagnostic technologies grows, the anticipation surrounding Nevisense’s implementation in clinical practice will likely increase, making skin health management more accessible to a broader demographic.

This transformative milestone not only enhances the reach of SciBase's technology but also reinforces the importance of strategic partnerships in modern healthcare, ultimately benefiting patients and providers alike.
