As the push for renewable energy grows, the demand for these minerals has never been higher. In particular, fluorspar—a lesser-known mineral—has surfaced as a key player in the clean energy discourse. It is integral to lithium-ion battery production, where it is used in electrolytes, cathodes, anodes, and other components. Despite its significance, fluorspar is still entirely imported into the U.S., raising alarms among policymakers.

Ares Strategic Mining: Pioneering Domestic Production



Amid this turbulent climate, Ares Strategic Mining Inc. is poised to play a significant role in mitigating this foreign dependence. Recently, the company secured an $11 million loan from the Utah State Legislature, intended to amplify production at its Lost Sheep fluorspar mine. The company expressed strong support for tariff increases on aluminum and has plans to construct the first new aluminum smelter in 50 years. Meanwhile, the United States Antimony Corporation is working on recovery efforts in Alaska, corroborating its commitment to U.S. critical mineral security. Their focus on antimony is particularly crucial due to its strategic application in defense and energy storage, especially in light of China's 2024 export ban on the mineral, which underscores the precarious nature of supply chains.

The Road Ahead



NioCorp Developments Ltd. is also advancing its Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project, having launched new feasibility studies aimed at optimizing mineral resources and securing financial support, with over $200 million being targeted from potential debt guarantees. On a similar note, Taseko Mines Limited is nearing completion of its Florence Copper Project, indicating robust development in the copper supply sector.

The combined efforts of these companies represent crucial steps towards reclaiming the U.S. independence in critical mineral production. With significant financial backing and permits in place, Ares is not only revitalizing America’s approach to fluorspar but is also becoming an integral part of a broader movement aimed at securing essential mineral resources domestically. The strategic relevance of Ares and its counterparts could significantly influence U.S. economic resilience and national security moving forward.
