Sungrow Discusses Vital Role of Energy Storage at BloombergNEF London Summit
Sungrow's Perspectives on Europe's Energy Transition
At the BloombergNEF (BNEF) London Summit, held on October 23, 2026, Sungrow, a prominent global provider in photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, shared critical insights regarding Europe's energy transition. The event tackled the growing demands for energy transition across Europe as it shifts towards deeper electrification and emphasizes smarter grid integration as key areas of focus.
The Vision for Europe’s Energy Future
Shawn Shi, the President of Sungrow Europe, articulated the company's dedication to supporting the evolving energy landscape in Europe. In his keynote address, he stressed the need for the energy transition to transcend merely increasing renewable energy capacity; it must also build a secure, resilient, and reliable power system.
A significant part of Shawn's address centered on localization and grid reliability, two vital components he believes will ensure the successful advancement of energy solutions. He declared, "The energy transition requires capacity that is local enough to support, trusted enough to connect, and strong enough to maintain grid stability." This perspective supports Sungrow's strategic move to establish a manufacturing footprint closer to its customers, exemplified by their upcoming manufacturing facility in Poland, which is set to become operational in 2027.
This facility, backed by a €230 million investment, reinforces supply chain resilience, ultimately benefitting local employees as Sungrow has already hired over 900 staff members primarily from local talent since its entry into Europe in 2011.
Aligning Cybersecurity and Energy Solutions
Additionally, Shawn underscored the importance of cybersecurity and effective management of energy assets and data systems in ensuring operational efficiency. He highlighted the necessity of collaboration with European suppliers, installers, and developers as critical to achieving a stable energy footprint in light of increasing renewable energy penetration.
Javier, Vice President of Sungrow Europe, contributed to discussions during a panel titled "'Made in Europe' Put to the Test: What Should Europe Fight to Keep?" This session included leaders from various sectors — industry, finance, and policy — as they examined strategies for reinforcing Europe’s clean-tech manufacturing base. The panelists debated the need for local-content requirements and how they may stimulate investment while navigating the realities of manufacturing costs and project timelines.
Technology and Investment Strategies for the Future
At the networking lunch themed "The Outlook for BESS in Europe: How Technology Shapes Investment and Project Development," Vice President James Li of Sungrow shared the platform with distinguished figures from the energy sector. They discussed essential trends, challenges, and innovations shaping Europe's battery energy storage system (BESS) market. The one-on-one exchanges addressed the role of energy storage in enhancing grid flexibility and resilience, as well as regulatory conditions required to secure projects and attract institutional capital.
Li emphasized looking beyond simple upfront costs when assessing energy storage investments, advocating for a focus on lifetime performance, reliability in operations, and comprehensive service support to enhance project economics and bolster investor confidence. The discussion also delved into advancements such as grid-forming capabilities and black-start functionality, which promise to increase power system resilience and operational flexibility.
Through its engagement at the summit, Sungrow reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with European stakeholders, aiming to propel clean energy deployment, bolster regional capabilities, and support the establishment of a dependable electricity infrastructure, marking their continued influence in the energy market.
