The 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art Opens Its Doors to the Public

The 18th edition of the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled "Passer d'un rêve à l'autre" (From One Dream to Another), officially opens to the public on September 19, 2026. This expansive exhibition runs until December 13 and promises an immersive experience across 11 sites in Lyon and its metropolitan area, featuring over 120 artists and nearly 400 works.

Under the adept curation of Catherine Nichols, this year's Biennale places a particular emphasis on human connections at the heart of our economy. It explores vital and timely questions relating to creativity, storytelling, and shared responsibility in shaping our future. Attendees are encouraged to engage with the art and themes presented across major venues, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (macLYON) and the Lyon Fine Arts Museum, among other unexpected locations.

Les Grandes Locos serves as the central hub for the Biennale, hosting a significant portion of the exhibition, while the other ten venues are strategically chosen to showcase a variety of artistic expressions. This unique structure allows visitors to create their own itineraries and explore the Biennale at their own pace throughout its nearly three-month run. Attendees can purchase passes ranging from 18 to 25 euros, granting access to all participating sites and allowing for multiple visits throughout the fall. Notably, children under 15 and art students from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region receive free entry.

In a bid to make the event accessible to all ages, the Biennale introduces several new initiatives this year, including easy-to-read exhibition labels. Visitors can enhance their experience by booking guided tours for a minimal fee and renting audio guides at key exhibition sites.

The central theme of the 18th Biennale, exploring dreams and transitions, underscores how creativity can open up new modes of coexistence. The exhibition invites participants to reflect on how imagination and collective action can transform the current limitations into a shared vision for the future.

The Biennale also provokes dialogue about the increasing role of technology in our lives, particularly as it relates to the advent of AI. The discussion pivots around a work by Thierry Ehrmann, the founder of Artprice, exploring the significance of humanist dialogue with emerging technologies. Through artworks, essays, and public discussions, the Biennale aims to shed light on the sociocultural implications of these transformations.

For over 40 years, the Lyon Biennale has played a pivotal role in evolving contemporary art and has helped position the Lyon metropolitan area as a prominent platform for artists and art enthusiasts worldwide. Artprice has been an integral partner, documenting the changes and trajectories within the international art scene.

As visitors venture through the Biennale, they are not just observing art but participating in a broader reflection on society and the artistic process.

Join us in this unique celebration of art which promises to provoke thought, inspire creativity, and foster communal dialogue until December 13, 2026.
