AI Program Enhances Communication Skills Among High School Students

Innovative AI Program for Enhancing Dialogue Skills

Cognitee Inc., a communication research company based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has partnered with Niigata Seiryo High School in Niigata City to conduct an experimental program aimed at scientifically enhancing students' dialogue skills. The initiative responds to the challenges faced by Generation Z, known for their reluctance to participate in discussions unless adequately prepared.

Background: The Communication Challenges of Generation Z

According to a communication survey conducted by Cognitee in 2024, Generation Z students are generally hesitant to speak up on topics they don't feel confident or prepared about. Having grown up accustomed to asynchronous, non-face-to-face communication, these students find the prospect of sudden dialogue or discussions intimidating. As a result, Niigata Seiryo High School is proactively working to create a supportive environment where students can understand and feel comfortable using structured dialogue methods before engaging in discussions.

Program Implementation: AI-Driven Feedback

In January 2025, discussions led by both teachers and students were analyzed using AI, allowing for the extraction of structural characteristics found in effective discussions. This analysis led to the development of a tailored feedback report named "COG-DISCUSS." This report evaluates individual students based on specific discussion activities and outlines facilitation and group discussion skills, offering insights into strengths and areas for improvement.

For example, the report can highlight questions posed by facilitators that prompted deeper exploration or indicate when the flow of discussion deviated. It also identifies topics that were under-explained by participants, ensuring more comprehensive discussions.

In March, a workshop was held utilizing this report where students learned to compare the discourse of teachers with their discussions, aiming to identify methods for deepening engagement in conversations.

Results: Visualizing Improvements Through AI

Following the lecture and application of the feedback report, significant improvements were demonstrated in student discussions:

  • - Increased Participation: Average speaking time among members increased by approximately 83%, with their contribution jumping from 53.3% to 88.9%.
  • - Consolidated Topics: The number of under-explained topics decreased from 3.1 to 1.4, indicating improved depth in subject matter discussions.
  • - Higher Quality Inquiries: The frequency of quality questions posed among members increased by 1.5 times, strengthening the bi-directional flow of conversation.

Before the intervention, facilitators dominated discussions, contributing to nearly half of the dialogue time. After receiving targeted instruction, facilitators reduced their speaking time to roughly one-fifth, balancing the dialogue distribution across all participants.

Feedback Assessment: Enhanced Discussion Quality

Initial discussions displayed variability in quality metrics, with substantial differences between groups noted by AI (scores ranged from 0 to 36). Following the intervention, all groups achieved a consistent standard of constructive discourse, with scores clustering between 80 and 100. Common observations included more confident facilitation and logical questioning from participants.

This transformation showcases the value of structured feedback reports (COG-DISCUSS) in supporting practical improvement in communication skills.

The Value of Dialogue in Distance Learning

Niigata Seiryo High School's communication-based curriculum emphasizes the cultivation of portable skills—skills that can be carried and utilized across various contexts—even when separated by physical distance. By leveraging AI for scientific feedback, they propose a new potential for distance education that supports transparent progress in communication skills.

Cognitee aims to visualize and quantify communication and cognitive abilities previously relied upon subjective assessments. This collaboration with Niigata Seiryo High School is regarded as a significant step towards objectively nurturing skills essential for effective communication and connectivity in educational environments. Cognitee is committed to building mechanisms that help all students recognize their growth, starting with high school education and extending to diverse learning environments in the future.
