What is the Afternoon Concert?
The Afternoon Concert series, initiated by the Tokyo Philharmonic in 2001, has become a hallmark of classical music in Japan. Traditionally held at 2 PM, these concerts offer not just exceptional music but also engaging narratives from the conductors and musicians, creating a unique atmosphere that attracts audiences who might not normally attend evening performances. The first of its kind in Japan, this series has expanded to include weekday concerts starting in 2016 and a dedicated series at Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Shibuya since 2019.
The concept of having conductors talk to the audience from the front of the stage was groundbreaking at the launch, and it has since set a trend that many orchestras across Japan now follow. Each concert features well-loved classical pieces along with special segments where attendees can ask the conductors questions or hear behind-the-scenes stories, making each performance an unforgettable experience.
