Birmingham City Schools Pioneers Research Initiative



Birmingham City Schools (BCS) is making significant strides in educational research by launching an innovative initiative designed to examine the pivotal relationship between student motivation and mathematics achievement. Collaborating with esteemed partners such as WestEd and MIND Education—which is renowned for its ST Math program—BCS is set to harness real-time, data-driven insights to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes over a three-year period. Supported by a grant from the Gates Foundation, this initiative represents a major step forward in evidence-based educational strategies.

A Commitment to Research-Driven Education


BCS has established a strong commitment to utilizing evidence-based approaches as a cornerstone of its strategic vision. By securing this research grant, the district is taking the lead in redefining how student motivation is fostered and assessed within the K-12 curriculum. According to Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, while curriculum access is crucial for learning, it is equally important for students to stay engaged and motivated.

Dr. Sullivan stated, "This partnership aligns seamlessly with our focus on academic achievement, ensuring our students gain access to the best digital tools while enhancing their motivation—a key driver of success."

Transforming Motivation into Measurable Insights


The ST Math program sets itself apart from traditional mathematics curricula by employing a unique, game-based learning framework that encourages students to tackle visual puzzles rather than rote memorization. This interactive approach aids in generating robust engagement data, providing vital insights into how student persistence and initiative impact their math performance.

Andrew Coulson, Chief Data Scientist at MIND Education, elaborates on the project’s goals, noting, "ST Math has historically motivated students to work through complex puzzles, and this initiative aims to convert that motivation into quantifiable metrics. For the first time, we’ll analyze gameplay data to establish a real-time measure of student motivation, pinpointing when students disengage. This will allow educators to proactively assist students, ensuring that motivational dips do not hinder their learning experience."

Collaborative Research Framework


What distinguishes this project from conventional district-vendor relationships is the collaborative research model being employed. BCS, along with its partners WestEd and MIND Education, are co-designing this research to ensure that the insights gleaned are not only pertinent but also actionable for educators and school administrators.

John Rice, Senior Research Director at WestEd, stresses the importance of incorporating the district's input throughout the research process. "Involving BCS staff at every stage—from formulating research questions to reporting findings—is essential for creating impactful and relevant research outcomes. This project also aims to share learnings beyond BCS, benefitting the broader education community."

In an era where digital learning tools are becoming commonplace, the challenge lies in ensuring all students utilize these resources effectively. Despite the proven benefits of digital platforms, engagement often falters, limiting the desired educational impact.
