What Makes a Happy Marriage? Insights from Recent Research

What Makes a Happy Marriage?

On November 22, known as “Good Couple Day,” couples often take the opportunity to celebrate their relationship. But what truly defines a "good marriage"? Recent research conducted by Mizukara, a Tokyo-based company specializing in cognitive science coaching, sheds light on what enhances marital bonds among couples.

The survey, conducted on October 21, 2025, gathered insights from 500 employed individuals aged between 25 and 59. One of the key findings revealed that couples who share dreams and values tend to have significantly better relationships. However, within the same concept of marriage, the dynamics can vary greatly from one couple to another.

Those who are in less harmonious marriages often find that their values are not aligned, even when they share the same space. This raises the question: is it the case that marital harmony fosters shared values, or is it that sharing values leads to better harmony? Interestingly, this study suggests an active approach: to enhance marital happiness, both partners should strive to share their values. Initiating this process can start with simple self-disclosure about personal feelings or experiences.

The Importance of Compromise

The essence of a good marriage lies within ongoing mutual efforts to understand each other. While it’s unrealistic to expect complete acceptance of one another’s values, the importance of addressing discomforts openly is crucial. This study also revealed how couples are striving to align their values. It appears that couples who enjoy a healthy relationship tend to work through issues collaboratively, strengthening their connection with each resolution.

Conversely, around 40-50% of couples, regardless of their relationship status, admitted to never attempting to resolve discrepancies. It is suggested that those in healthier marriages typically face fewer issues, while others may feel resigned to their circumstances. This highlights a need for both partners to actively engage in understanding each other’s viewpoints.

Influence of Parental Relationships

When contemplating marital dynamics, it is essential to recognize the subconscious impact of one’s parents. The study also explored how the quality of one’s parents’ relationship influences their own. Results indicated a noticeable pattern; individuals tend to mirror the dynamics they observed during their childhood. Children raised in households marked by conflict may unconsciously come to view that type of relationship as the norm, affecting how they approach their own marriages.

The study revealed that approximately 80% of participants considered their current marriage to be a good one. This reflects a legacy of belief passed down from parents that marriage should generally be harmonious. To nurture this positive cultural inheritance, couples need to make a conscious effort to share their values and engage collaboratively in their relationship.

Conclusion

Through the in-depth survey by Mizukara, it’s clear that the quality of marital relationships is not solely based on love but is significantly influenced by communication, compromise, and shared beliefs. As a society, we are encouraged to advance these practices to build stronger families and, in turn, contribute positively to future generations’ perceptions of marital bonds.
