Launching the SCP Project: A New Era for Inter-University Collaboration in Japan

The Launch of the SCP Project

In a significant step towards enhancing collaborative education in Japan, the Social Cross Project (SCP) is set to commence in April 2026, led by the Japan Financial Education Support Organization and the Tourism Crossover Association. This innovative inter-university program aims to engage students in Project Based Learning (PBL) across various fields, including finance education, social issues, tourism, and career training.

Background of the SCP Project

With a growing emphasis on practical learning, recent years have seen universities prioritizing Project Based Learning (PBL) initiatives that address societal challenges. It has become clear that a young person's perception of their future is influenced not just by knowledge and academic ability but significantly by their interactions with diverse adults and peers. Research indicates that children’s career aspirations and perspectives can be profoundly shaped by the adults they encounter, particularly within their immediate networks, including parents and educators.

Furthermore, comparative studies by the Children and Family Agency highlight that Japanese youth often express lower levels of self-esteem and optimism about their future compared to their peers in other countries. One identified reason for this disparity is the lack of access to social opportunities and role models that varies significantly due to their community or school affiliation.

In response, the cooperating organizations have connected their efforts in community revitalization, including workshops focused on financial education for young people held in collaboration with Sekisui House in Hyogo Prefecture. This initiative set the stage for deeper partnerships.

Understanding SCP

The Social Cross Project is designed as a unique inter-university PBL initiative aimed to encourage students to learn from one another across different schools and regions while tackling societal issues. Participants will actively engage in local workshops and community initiatives, gaining hands-on experience through planning, public relations, outreach, management, and reflective learning.

A feature of this initiative will be inviting guest speakers such as entrepreneurs, finance professionals, municipal employees, and educators. This exposure creates opportunities for students to interact with a variety of role models from diverse professional backgrounds.

SCP transcends traditional classroom learning and volunteering; it is crafted as a co-creation model that helps students nationwide connect with their communities and society.

Key Details of SCP Implementation

  • - Duration of the Project: The SCP Project will take place from April 2026 to March 2027. Student recruitment, community formation, and preparatory training will begin in April, followed by the main activities starting in June.
  • - Participating Universities (in alphabetical order): Kagawa University, Senshu University, Yamanashi Prefecture (including universities involved in the Yamanashi Mirai Project), among others.
  • - Organizers: Japan Financial Education Support Organization, Tourism Crossover Association.

Activities Planned

1. Workshops related to the FES Contest.
2. Inter-university online meetings.
3. Guest speaker events.
4. Learning and practical activities tied to local issues.
5. Operation of a student executive committee.
6. Support for regional and national competitions.
7. Documenting activities and reflections.

SCP aims to build a new PBL model that collaborates with credit systems established by the participating universities, enabling students to work together on a single project.

Future Outlook

The year 2026 is designated as a trial period, allowing for the expansion of participant universities and partner regions. The long-term goal is to collaborate with 100 universities nationwide, as well as to facilitate discussions among university students, high school students, and adults beyond their localities to create an extensive community aimed at empowering youth to meet societal challenges.

Call for Partnerships

SCP is actively seeking universities, municipalities, businesses, financial institutions, and community organizations to join this nationwide initiative.
  • - Universities interested in linking PBL and credit systems
  • - Educational Institutions wishing to provide practical learning experiences for students
  • - Companies with interests in financial and career education, as well as regional revitalization
  • - Municipalities and Community Organizations aiming to promote youth participation in their areas
  • - Businesses and Financial Institutions wishing to support next-generation talent development

Through this initiative, the goal is to connect universities, regions, and businesses in a way that allows young people to grow while engaging with society.

Statements from Representatives

Risa Hirai, Co-Chairperson of Japan Financial Education Support Organization:
“The SCP program was conceived from my desire for the type of learning I wish I had as a student. I realize now how limited my interactions with society were during my own education. The program aims to broaden students' life choices by offering them enriching interactions with a variety of adults.”

Takashi Nishioka, Director of the Tourism Crossover Association:
“Throughout our efforts, focusing on ‘the intersection of tourism and education,’ we recognize that the potential of financial literacy lies not just in learning about finance but as a gateway to deeper community and societal engagement. SCP expands these practical learning opportunities across different institutions for the benefit of students.”

The SCP initiative represents a significant stride toward redefining how learning and community engagement can inspire and empower the youth of Japan to become active participants in society.
