SAKE COMPETITION 2026: The Premier Sake Contest

The world's largest sake competition, SAKE COMPETITION 2026, is set to take place, aiming to determine the best commercially available sake. Scheduled for June 10, 2026, at the TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY LINKPILLAR in Tokyo, the event will culminate in an awards ceremony and a celebratory party showcasing top-rated sakes and gourmet dishes pairings. A Growing Global Trend

Japan's sake industry is witnessing a remarkable rise in popularity worldwide, often referred to as the “sake boom.” However, many consumers still find the variety and flavors of sake somewhat overwhelming and challenging to navigate. Established in 2012, the SAKE COMPETITION aims to bridge this gap by providing a new standard for identifying genuinely delicious sake, free from brand bias.

The competition exclusively evaluates commercially available sake, ensuring that the identity of brands is concealed during the tasting process. This blind-tasting format allows judges, drawn from various sake professionals and experts, to focus solely on quality without brand preconceptions, offering every sake entry an equal chance at recognition.

Categories and Additional Features for 2026

This year's edition will feature five primary categories:
1. Junmai (Pure Rice Sake)
2. Junmai Ginjo
3. Junmai Daiginjo
4. Super Premium
5. Modern Natural

In honor of the upcoming restoration of the Shuri Castle in fall 2026, a special Awamori category has been added as well. Judging will take place over May 12-14, with the awards ceremony scheduled for June 10. Attendees will not only enjoy award-winning sakes but also a culinary experience, including dishes created by the renowned chef at Happen-yen, specifically designed to complement the winning sakes.

Rigorous Judging Process

The judging panel consists of nationally recognized instructors and sake brewers, who have been nominated based on their expertise. The rigorous assessment conditions include blind tastings, where the display order is randomized by computer to ensure impartiality. Entrants are evaluated based on two critical criteria: the inherent quality of sake as a rice-based beverage and its overall enjoyable characteristics for drinking.

Since its inception, the competition has expanded significantly, and in 2025, more than 1,000 entries were received, emphasizing its grandeur and diversity. The Sake Competition exemplifies the dedication to enhancing the quality of sake and guiding consumers towards exceptional products.
